Firebrand

I read recently that a Firebrand had been lost in Plymouth Harbour.

Does anyone know if it was recovered, or is it still there?

Plymouth Harbour is well protected from the sea, so if it is still there it may not be in as poor a condition as some others, lost in the open sea, although no doubt salt would have attacked it.

I think that it can be considered that salt water corrosion is no longer attacking EK793…

After its short dip into the “oggin” March 1949, 110 was recovered, SOC and was last seen on Gosport Dump in 1951.

Quite a common result for any FAA aircraft ditching post war near a naval port with harbour clearance divers.

I know they had a trick up their sleeves with regards to the torpedoes. The torpedos tail end was jacked up and down for landing, flying and takeoff to maintain clearance.

There is an old Firebrand thread I trawled through, and I was looking at Air Enthusiast May/June 2007 – No. 129.

Strangely, having been fascinated by an RC model of one waaaaay back in the early 90s, I’ve never looked anything up about the Firebrand! Maybe I should… 😮
