Hi
The front of the firing button was missing and i had to replace it.I just hadn`t turned it round far enough. It is now in the correct position. The ball mounting bracket is brass,it is just dirty.I have an early Defiant Dunlop patent grip and it is exactly the same as this one.I would be very interested to see a picture of the front of the call light box if you could send me one.

yours is earlier Nick.
The grip looks good, but the button should not be poking up so high when in the fire position…should only go as high as this (My Tempest grip), looking at my grip, it is cocked alittle too high and should be a little more horizontal (so that your thumb is parallel to the top of the stock):-

Hi – Defiant column I would agree, though a few details on the grip don’t quite match – brake cable guide is different & the steel bracket doesnt look right next to it. Also the pivot ball mountings on mine are all solid brass & the one still on this column is not?

Sorry for poor photo, but I think you will get the idea.

In reply to the above posts i can confirm that the grip and column are indeed from a Defiant.I have attached some pictures of the restored grip. The serial number is correct and the grip is the same as my earlier Defiant Dunlop grip. The only difference being that this one is made of mag alloy. If anyone knows of a call light box for sale(forlorn hope i know)i would be most grateful.

I think it’s probably a genuine Defiant item.

Whoever asked this question was on the right track:-

“Hi Can you tell me,is there a hole drilled through the grip on the flat piece at the six o clock position directly above where the control column enters the grip?”

He is referring to the routing for the cable to the Call Lights Switchbox which was mounted on a bracket on the front of the grip.

The seller doesn’t seem to have understood the question properly, but by examining the photos carefully, you can just about make out what the questioner was referring to.

£300 for a Defiant column (albeit incomplete) doesn’t sound too bad to me.

(No, I didn’t bid for it!)

I see it went for £301 in the end.

Still something odd about it and it seems the grip is fixed to the pole with some sort of plastic metal padding?? The absence of the securing bolt is a little suspicious, if I may say so!

Andy, I agree about the Swordfish having a patent grip, but I also thought the Defiant did as well! You will probably know for sure.

I have a Swordfish column and it has a ball and socket arrangement just like the one on ebay, maybe Nick Wotherspoon or Millom will be able to say for sure as they have the remains of one.

I haven’t got a photo to hand but when the two bits are together from memory it looks in appearance identical to the one on eBay, Nick may have a complete photo if not I will try to get one over the weekend.

Whilst I will bow to the knowledge that this is Defiant, there is something about this that isn’t “quite right”. Cannot put a finger on it, exactly. However, it looks to me as if the grip is a quite recent addition to the pole. Did the Defiant REALLY have that funny ball and socket thingy??

Do we know what the AH number is on the grip?

Also, the metal of the grip itself does not look like the quality “early” castings that I know Defiants had.

Elliott….I think the Swordfish was AH2040, as per Hurricane, Skua, Harvard etc etc.

While not doubting it probably is from a Defiant, it does also look a bit like that from a Swordfish! Just thought i’d mention it…
