Display Authorisation – Whats required?

Hello,

I just wondered if someone could outline what is required to get a CAA display authorisation? I assume that there are minimum hour requirements etc etc. It’s not something that I’m looking to do personally… I’m just curious!

Foreign pilots at Legends have to do DA flights. It’s one of the reasons there is so much flying on Thursday & Friday before the show…

For Foreign civil pilots a DA has to be issued. Da must be renewed every year by a DAE, 13 months to be exact! If any changes/aditions to DA are wanted then these to have to be demonstrated to a DAE and an application sent to the CAA for approval, and the required fee paid of course;)

That i couldn’t tell you, sorry. I know at Farnborough, foreign display pilots have DAs issued based on their practice days, not quite sure though if it applies to the military, foreign or home based. As for the Liberty Belle, or any of the French participants, no idea – never needed to know!

How does a DA work with foreign visiting pilots and aircraft ?
Thinking about the legends show Liberty Belle was only here a short time did she and her pilots have to satisfy a Dae aswell ? Or did a DA qualified pilot from this country do the display ?

Normally the pilot applying for the DA, will have to convince a Display Authorisations Examiner (DAE). This usually takes place in the form of the pilot being observed flying the display routine, in the display aircraft. There are DAs for different types of display, all that have to be authorised by the DAE, tailchasing is one, formation passes is another, solo aerobatics, jets, etc etc.

Pilots have to prove a knowledge of airshow regulations, as well as be clear on the limitations applied to their DA. There are annual DA meetings where new rules, regulations, changes or incidents are discussed. DAs have to be renewed infront of a DAE, I believe, every 5 years. Thats very simply, about it.

Did it back in 2005, took quite a bit of work even for three aircraft per day
