Here is a photograph for Typhoon enthusiasts to puzzle over. And no….it isn’t Graham Adlam’s latest project! :diablo: Neither is it an attempt by a former Typhoon pilot to surreptitiously murder the missus in the kitchen above by Carbon Monoxide poisoning – hoping that she will mistake the racket kicked up the Sabre for her new-fangled washing machine!:D
I wonder how many people know the answer to what and where?

Jeez, it dosen’t look very secure down there for tests!

Cranswick was pretty much right with his version….but others were close, too.
In fact, it depicts Winterisation Trials using R7712 and the photo is taken either at the Pure Ice Co in Waterloo or the Eldorado Ice Cream facility. Both locations were used. The date was July 1944 through to Jan 1945.
So…any previous description by Ken Rimmel stating that it was “being tested to destruction” by Napier’s is a bit off-beam, although, to be fair it does seem to have been just about destroyed to get it into the fridge in the first place!!

Further to my last, I have been told that when the Sabre ran, icey exhaust fumes vented to the exterior caused a minor ‘snow’ storm in the adjoining street – much to the consternation of the driver of a passing horse and cart (it was c.May 1943 I believe). The trials may have been in connection with the plans to divert Typhoon output to Russia.
would they have wanted them? had the best ground attack plane of the war in the Il-2 range IMO, and when they got P-47’s for air to ground they hardly used them. off thread sorry….

in a way…
I almost don’t want to know – best fun thread I’ve read in a while, but good to see that there are still some mysteries to solve…..

Underground Typhoon
‘Winterisation trials’ under the Walls icecream factory in Acton(?) I believe.

That ceiling does look like a freezer, so my guess would also be extreme cold weather trials for engine performance.

A cold start test? The WD40 can must be just out of shot.

“A Napier Sabre under destruction testing at Napier’s own engine test facility in Acton, London” According to Ken Rimmel’s little pictorial tribute to the Typhoon. Knew I’d seen it somewhere…
Would that be destruction testing of the Napier Sabre or of the test facility? Or should it read “A Napier Sabre underneath destruction testing (of something else) at Napier’s own engine test facility in Acton, London”

Sorry….Ken Rimmel isn’t exactly correct here.
well thats enough to confirm it then! smiles
NO Wrong!
Its clearly one of the three dis-assembled aircraft hidden in an underground bunker in Bundaburg Australia!

Did someone leave the landing light on at the bottom of the basement stairs? Is it in a really big freezer for testing something which might freeze? Warmer or colder?

In the basement of a skiing lodge in the Italian Alps? Used as a snow blowing machine in it’s time?

Cornetto, anyone?! 😉

It looks pretty cold in that cellar.
Could that be ice on the overhead pipework?

If the rear fusealage is R7712….which it isn’t! There…..that’s given it right away. Doh!
