White Tails?

What is the reason for white tails as on P-40 & P-39 at Legends.

RNZAF P40’s had these, as well as white diagonal stripes on the upper wings, back from the undercarriage fairings and some had a stripe across the top of the fuselage, behind the cockpit, as well, eg as in this P40 at Torokina, 1944

Taken from Airfix model guide USAAF camouflage of WW2.
To avoid confusion with the Kawasaki Ki-61 Tony, 5th AF directed that from september 1943 all single engined fighters would have white tail surfaces and wing leading edges. the tail marking was brought forward on to thr rear fuselarge to terminate in a straight or horizontal back or sloping line. These markings where used until late 1944.

The white tail was used as an identification marking on USAAF and RAAF aircraft in the south Pacific (New Guinea) – I don’t have the specifics (date of adoption, etc.).
