Hi. I’m Tony. New kid on the block.
Below is my wedding photo taken in 1988 infront of Spitfire MK16 SL674 at St. Georges Chapel, Biggin Hill.

In 1989 it was removed and taken to St. Athan for storage. I just happened to be passing on that day with me camera.

Since then I have taken an interest (more like an obsession) in SL674’s history. Listed below is what I have so far (please correct me if there are any errors):
Built at Castle Bromwich late 1944.
July 1945 to 29 MU RAF High Ercall, Shropshire (wasn’t this Bomber Comand?)
April 1946 17 OTU.
August 1947 501 Squadron, Filton.
September 1948 FAAC (Q. What is a catagory AC accident?)
April 1949 612 Squadron, Dyce, Aberdeen.
1956 Biggin Hill Gate Guardian.
1989 taken to St. Athan.
Wings used for MK356.

Now in storage at RAF Museum reserve, Stafford.

I plan to put a page on my website, http://www.bigginhill-history.co.uk, with photos, about the history of SL674. If you have any pictures of SL674, whether as a gate guardian or in service, or any other useful info, that I can use on my site please let me know. I will of course credit you with the pics.
Many thanks.

This got me thinking about how many Spits passed through St Athan at the time.
From memory…
MK356 – airworthy
EP120 – airworthy
SL674 – Stafford?
SL542 – was this the one recently hanging in a barn in Quebec?
PK664 – Still at the Science Museum?
PK624 – ?
LA198 – Glasgow?
RW393 – Cosford?
Can’t think of any others, although there were rumours of more ex gate guards stored in hangars on the opposite side of the runway to the museum, although I never got to have a peek inside:(. Still we didn’t have a bad collection:cool:

Hmm… SL674 to the left, MK356 to the right, but what’s the early Spit in the middle?

Hello Tony,
A couple of photos from about ’91 at St Athan…..
Arriving…

I spent about 6 months worth of weekends in the rear fuselage of this one, trying to get rid of the thick black preservative. It was hot, cramped and hard work, but great fun!

I’m pretty sure this is ‘674 on the left

Hope these are of use.
Cheers

BH gate guardians.
Ok you lot. You have a great help so far. Now I have some more questions for you.
Was SL674 the first guardian at Biggin Hill?
Is it true that Douglas Bader flew the first guardian inti Biggin Hill??
The markings on the replica Spitfire at Biggin Hill now, do they relate to the original guardian or what???
Over to you guys.

Ah yes. I read about that Spitfire. Thought it was in storage till next year but it’s nice to have a ‘local’ Spitfire to see now and then. Thanks for the info.

Hey. I was out in the garden today (only a mile or so from Biggin Hill airport) when I heard something ‘big’ taking off. Not the usual private jet but a piston engine. I think you know what i’m going to say next, yes, it was a Merlin. You can tell those things straight away (sigh!). Anyway, as it gained height the pitch increased. A sure sign it is heading my way. And sure enough, over the trees, there she was. Don’t know what mark Spit it was but she was beautiful.
I didn’t go to the BH airshow this year (no Vulcan) and my complimentary tickets to RIAT were washed out so it was nice to have my own little air show in my back garden.
Even if it was oinly a fly past.
IIRC, Mk.IX TA805 “The Kent Spitfire” is based at Biggin these days, so it would most likely have been her.

I just hope we can record his entire memory (like Joe 90) for the benefit of future generations 😀
Careful Zwitter. Joe 90? Your showing your age! 🙂

Tony, what Mark 12 doesn’t know about the world’s surviving Spits could be written on an ant’s kneecap. Probably a very young ant too.
I just hope we can record his entire memory (like Joe 90) for the benefit of future generations 😀

None of the many liveries applied to SL674 in its association with Biggin Hill would be considered etc etc etc.
How do you know so much about this Mark12? You are a font of all knowledge!
Tony.

Look what I have been sent tonight from someone from the Biggin Hill Battle of Britain Supporters’ Club Website http://www.bhbobsc.org.uk/. Taken in 1950. More please 🙂

Or is it SL674??
It is…but taken circa 1958/1960.

Whilst at 612 Squadron it may have initially still been camouflaged and coded RAS-H, I am doubtful. By its transfer date the order of the day was silver overall and indeed SL674 was silver with red code letters RAS-H.
Mark.
Now THAT’S a pic i’d like to see. Is there one out there??? Tony

None of the many liveries applied to SL674 in its association with Biggin Hill would be considered accurate by today’s standards and knowledge.
SL674 would never have been painted brown/green with or without the early roundels.
Initially at 17 0TU it was painted in the May 1945 Grey/Green day fighter scheme and coded AY-A.
With the move to 501 Squadron it carried the same scheme but was now coded RAB-R.
Whilst at 612 Squadron it may have initially still been camouflaged and coded RAS-H, I am doubtful. By its transfer date the order of the day was silver overall and indeed SL674 was silver with red code letters RAS-H.
Mark.
