Bit of business? Urgent appointment with a cheeseburger? 😀

Visited museum on monday AM, didn’t get a look in the tin triangle, as the lads were busy moving engines out of the little shed, it’s a nice little museum though.

Weekend was a bit of a damp squib, wasn’t it. Think next year they’ll line up a few backup displays for the arena on the ground, in case the weather kills the flying.

We really enjoyed the RMC unarmed combat display, that was a good laugh, and at least gave people something to watch.

Not sure what to do next, don’t know if we’ll be able to afford another weekend away or another airshow this year, but i’m tempted by the 90th anniversary show at Duxford.

Elvington this Sunday, in theory, supposed to be running up the Victor and Buccaneer, maybe with a couple of fly-ins (i heard JP and Tiger Moth mentioned, but not confirmed)

Least if the planes are on the ground, we’ll be able to see them.

I’m setting off after work tonight, about 6 ish.

it’s about a 2 hour drive, so we’ll be there, tent put up, and in the boozer by nine, with a bit of luck.

Though after last night, i might stick to the alcohol free stuff.

Made our weekly trip to the pub after our game of squash and i fell spectacularly over a gate taking a shortcut through the playing fields on way home.

On the way there, i’d nonchalantly vaulted the same gate. Apparently it’s more difficult to do in the dark, with beer inside.

The airshow website got updated with some details of what’s on the ground, looks impressive. I wasn’t sure how much there’d be, not having been before, but seems like there’s going to be plenty to see.

Might leave the army climbing wall alone though,.:D

on a lighter slightly less model aircraftish note….popped down along the coast today and its looking quite impressive, HMS Southampton is in dock, RFA lyme Bay is anchored off the beach, the static aircraft are in place..saw a harrier being pushed off a low loader today (quite impressive using only 5 men) cant wait for the show now 🙂

ian, when are you heading up, is it tomorrow?

lovely piece of sarcasm there, thanks.. i’ll repeat back, also very slowly.. we are aware that airfix don’t make a victor.

I said the difference between Airfix and Revell, not the difference between an Airfix Victor and a Revell Victor, didn’t i?

If you read back.. I said i’d looked, and thought the only available one was by Revell.

Earlier, woe of woes, I made the mistake of generalising the term ‘airfix’ to mean an aircraft model in kit form, as opposed to the specific manufacturer of said models. Boy, am i sorry now!

This, however, i agree with;

NO NO NO!!!!

I was pointing out the similarities between Matchbox and Revell. Now the differences between the Revell Victor and the Airfix one are enormous because, I’ll say it slowly, AIRFIX DID NOT MAKE A VICTOR KIT!

Did someone say there was an airshow somewhere up North soon?

Embrace your anorakdom, wear it like a badge of rank. For it is the light and the only true way.

Edited to add that it was ZRX61 who christened me a ‘blithering’ anorak and deep down I suspect that was only because he couldn’t come up with anything better that the forum software would allow.

Pete? Back on track? You sure? That’s a relief.

They get allsorts of visitors at Lakenheath and Mildenhall i guess, and in flying terms, we’re only a stone’s throw away.

Fair point on the thread-jacking, it’s been my fault both times today, made the mistake of mentioning airfix kits to Scott (the rightful owner of the thread!) and ended up unwittingly pulling in Kev_35, self-confessed anorak for a completely off-topic discussion on the difference between Airfix and Revell.

What was the topic? oh yes, anyone off to Sunderland this weekend? lol

Don’t worry, these things happen, you’re back on thread.

Could Be F/A 18. Maybe from Waddington. I have seen F 4`s and Mirages in our area wich I put down to the visitors at Waddington.
Best sighting ever in our area was between Hornsea and Briddlington looked out of the car window and there was an Avenger cannon looking back at me. A 10`s had popped up over the hill and flew right over the car. Amazing !
Any way could talk about it all day, but no more thread jacking lol.

Cheers

Ben

“Ps. Do you see the Apache, Lynx, Chinook, Hawks ect. ect. ect. “

I’m the same for rushing to the window when i hear something.

I’ve seen a Chinook (very low, probably less than 100ft, and banking quite steeply) a month or two ago, pair of Lynx come over occasionally, and a couple of Pumas came over quite low. Never seen an apache round here, though i know people who have, so they definitely come down here.

There’s obviously some sort of training that takes place round here, as they’re often flying low, treetop level, and usually not just going straight over.

Think i saw a pair of Merlins earlier this year as well, heard them go overhead but by the time i got to the right window they were a good distance away, fairly sure they were Merlins as they sounded heavy, like when a Chinook goes over, you feel the thrumming of the rotors before you hear or see them.

Hawks come over sometimes, saw one or two last week.

The Mrs saw something she was convinced was an F-22 about 2 months ago, it came low over the road right over my car, so i only saw a shape through the sunroof, and it was going pretty quick, but she was further up the road and claims it was a Raptor.

I remain skeptical. I’ve shown her pictures of the F-18, and anything else with that v-shaped double tail, as well as repeatedly telling her it was probably just an F-15.

Hi Ian.
I live in Howden.
I too see those aircraft on a regular basis. Never stops me running out into the Garden when ever I hear an aircraft engine though.
Ps. Do you see the Apache, Lynx, Chinook, Hawks ect. ect. ect.

I’m at work, we had two Typhoons over here most of yesterday, and a couple of Tucanos doing laps of our industrial estate (used to be an airfield, RAF Holme on Spalding Moor, where they tested the Buccaneer, we now get a lot of overflights from Tucano, King Air, Tornado, F-15 etc)

too far from a window to see any of them though, damn it.

Does she indeed, i looked at their online store, and it seemed quite limited, does she have access to a wider range? (is there a shed somewhere round the back of Airfix that has all the old ones they couldn’t shift!? that would be a great place if it existed)

Can’t find anywhere online that has an airfix Victor, so i reckon the Revell one might be the only one currently available.

Anyhow, best save that sort of thing for when the sun goes back in, got airshows and fishing to do while it’s not raining..

she does…its goes along the lines of…tell her what you want…she’ll order it in and let u know when its there she has contacts see 🙂

im currently sitting at home listening to the sound of hawks practicing for the airshow…phil K from NEAM works in sunderland city centre and has a view of the whole coast..im not happy 🙁

Airfix didn’t do a Victor did they? I thought it was Matchbox that produced the Victor and when they went out of business the moulds went on to Revell?

Regards,

kev35

Quite right and produced with authentic Gulf War markings as well. I was in mass model making phase about 10 years ago when my son was ‘of that age’ and we were hanging things all over his ceiling, we set up a scenario of it refuelling a Tornado and Buccaneer, I had to fabricate a refueling probe for the Bucc and do all the artwork with a 0.1 Rapidograph pen.
The Victor was a lovely model, one of my favourite completed kits in fact, don’t worry, after 2 house moves and a son that’s now left the roost, it’s still intact in a box in the garage along with the Focke Wulfs, Spits, Zeros…………….et al.

I had heard that, i thought the Phantom i bought was quite nice, and didn’t look too bad once it was painted, but i’m impatient and heavy handed, especially with painting, so i expect if you were doing it properly, and not just slapping it on any old how, you might have had some work to do to get the panel lines right.

Hadn’t built one for about 15 years til i did a couple this year, so i’m technically a novice, and wouldn’t notice things like that.

On many Matchbox kits the panel lines were deep, more like trenches. I don’t suppose the moulds have improved since going to Revell with the exception that at least the sprues would now be produced in a uniform colour.
