Museums Round The Midlands

Right,

I am off work tomorrow and need something to do. I am looking to head to a museum that isn’t Cosford or Baginton, within 50 miles of Brum. Any decent suggestions?

Various engines are on display, and some pix may be a good idea for this post. The museum is ‘old-style’, ie no computer games for the kids, but it is part of our heritage.

Bri 🙂

Something I missed out on my post was that I think some of the RR engines on display at Derby are aero engines. Could someone confirm that, and take some pics? I’m now ‘darn sarf’ so can’t do it myself.

….it’s going back to the shop in the morning – not impressed by it for airshow photography (although a fantastic compact)
May swing by my Dad’s in the morning and swipe his D50 – then I can startle you!

I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so! Even down to using a Nikon D50!

Try Tyesley, lots of steam engine activity and you may be able to bluff your way in to see the latest top secret project, the conversion of LMS Pacific Duchess of Hamilton back to it’s 1930’s streamlined condition, even the aviation world can’t compete with the secrecy and significance of this epic.

I know I’m too late for this post, but one museum you may have missed is the RR museum in Derby. Mainly for trains, true, but RR all the same.

Various engines are on display, and some pix may be a good idea for this post. The museum is ‘old-style’, ie no computer games for the kids, but it is part of our heritage.

And by the way, you can ‘sit in the cab’ of an Intercity 125 on a fast but very wet trip to London! It’s a projected film through the cab windows. Or it was a couple of years ago.

Go on WCFCFAN, just think, if you go to Cov, with your ‘New’ camera you may be able to startle us all with some ‘up close and personal’ pics of LB on her way home ! That chance may never happen again ? Keith.

I’m torn between the two now.

Whilst I saw Liberty Belle at DX on Saturday, the opportunity to get a bit more ‘personal’ with her, would be nice. I loved Legends, but seeing those planes in a quieter, less busy environment would probably have made it a bit more poigniant.

As Roger says there’s always Newark – just above the 50 miles mentioned but IMHO well worth the trip http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/ 😀

Presume you mean air museums?
bit hard pressed to find any more witihn 50 miles of Brum.
By Baginton I suppose you mean MAM. However tomorrow and Tuesday the Air Atlantique Classic Flight is open for the last two days of Dakota flights and there is usually admission (if you are not flying) for £10??? Many of AACF’s other aircraft are viewable and most days there are “hangar tours” – although last time I was volunteering there weren’t enough people to manage these. Added bonus is the rumour that “Liberty Belle” is to stage through AACF, Baginton on it’s way back to the ‘States Monday or Tuesday???
Castle Donnington (not sure when open) but a bit further away is Newark.
The Museum at Stoke on Trent has a Spitfire in an R.J.Mitchell exhibition.
You could ponder through the fence at the airframes at Long Marston. In the same direction is Wellesbourne (again not sure when open but, I think, only at weekends but you can see their aircraft from outside the fence – and the Vulcan (it’s a real friendly place)
If you’re desperate the Think Tank in Brum? 🙁

Roger Smith.
