Castle Air Museum, CA – April 2007

Hello everyone,

Following some positive posts in the Vulcans in North America thread I thought I’d post a couple (of hundred) pictures of my visit to the Castle Air Museum in Atwater, CA last April.

Please bear in mind that I’m not really a great photographer and I still have problems taking pictures of the aircraft even when gravity hs a tight hold of them. And sorry about the quality of the pictures too. I had to reduce them in size and they took a beating in the process.

It’s clearly a civil Lodestar, the basis for the Hudson. I like the RAF colours.

Also, a nice HH-43 Huskie and I hope they put the T-34 under cover with natural metal and clear canopy.
Also, a nice Cessna U-3A (310C). There is an similar one abandoned at a local GA field, I ‘d like to see a local museum save it and paint it in USAF colors.

If the F-86 looks odd, it’s because it’s an “H” with a deeper fuselage painted in Korean War markings of an earlier variant.
One of the last active Sabres in US miloitary service, the plane was surplused from the Maryland Air National Guard in 1970 (wearing 3 tone Vietnam-eara paint) and given to a local group home/school for mentally handicapped kids as a playground toy.
It was rescued by the Castle group years ago and taken to California.

Great pics! Anyone notice whats sitting near the cf100? That little power cart would supply the needed voltage to power up the vulcan… Oh if only it had the chance!!

Cracking shots, and your photography seems fine, however the pics look very low resolution which isn’t doing your work any credit.
You might be better loading the pics on to photobucket at higher rez and linking them to the forum.

Have signed up wih photobucket and will trabsfer all my high res pics onto a disc instead ofresizingthem and losing quality. 🙁

Nice to see RAF markings on the Harpoon/Hudson.

The plaque states it’s a Lodestar. I thought it was a Hudson too. Go figure, eh?

Interesting stuff though, very strange seeing such rare and valuable types, such as the Douglas pre-war bombers, left outside.
