I’m looking for help from anyone with a copy of Airmen Died in the Great War by Hobson. I am trying to isolate casualties from DH6 accidents during flying training. Hobson’s incredible work is the only way at present that I can see of doing this. But, it means looking through the chronological casualty listings for the RNAS, RFC, RAF and AFC, and then listing the date, name, unit and identity odf the aircraft.
My only access to this at present is at Birmingham Central Library and to be honest the travelling and the walking are killing me. I would and will buy a copy but the £80 price tag is currently out of reach. I know it’s a big ask but any help at all in retrieving this information would be appreciated.

Is there not a DH6 book though? Published by Air Britain? That may be an easier way into it.
Nope Air Britain book only covers DH4 and DH9

Hi,
I’ve got a copy as well.
If you can split the task down between a few people I’m happy to help.

Andy.
Please feel free to provide what you can it will be most appreciated. I’m currently trying to find everything I can on DH6 fatalities from any and every source available. So far, you are the only person to have offered to collate the information from Airmen Died in it’s entirety. (Not the whole book, just the DH6 Fatalities) which I now believe to be less than 200.
I know it’s a big task, I suspect it would take somewhere in the region of a day of solid searching so as I have said, it would be most appreciated.
I did send you a PM the other day with my contact details so please feel free to call if you need any further clarification.

I am still willing to help if you want, but don’t want to spend time on if you are sourcing the information another way.
Let me know.

Hi Kev
Only help I can give is hopefully a £40 saving on the book
Found ‘Airmen Died in the Great War’ by Chris Hobson for around £40 – £45 at WH Smiths, Blackwell’s and History Bookshop etc via the following link
http://fr.bookbutler.com/do/bookCompare?searchFor=187150581X&amountIn=gbp&shipTo=gb&searchIn=uk&zip=
They have a list of online stores where the book can be purchased although some suggest they will have to ‘source’ which could mean they may be unable to obtain a copy
The used books seem to be at least double the price! First editions maybe?
Better than £80 anyway, so hope this helps and good luck with the research
Chris

Roger.
My library hasn’t been able to confirm that it is available on inter library loan as yet. Tangmere has kindly offered to look up the information for me but I’m not sure he yet realises what a task it is. Inter library turnaround time is currently two to three months so hopefully, and thanks to the generosity of others, I should have the information before then. Either way I definitely intend to buy a copy as soon as I am able.

Presumably the book you have been using at Birmingham Library is a “reference only” copy.
It set me wondering – if you went to another library and requested it through the inter-library loan system would you be able to take that one home with you?

Adrian.
Thanks for that. Already a member of the Great War Forum and asked this question yesterday. We shall see what is forthcoming from all sources.

Kev,
It’s also possible you may get help on the Great War Forum:
http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/
They have a dedicated section for the war in the air, and I suspect your task would be right up the street of some of the people there. Plus there are a number of Flypast forumites there already. You’ll need to register, and wait for a response (due to spammers, unfortunately), but it has some extremely knowledgeable and helpful people there.
Hope that helps,
Adrian

Tangmere.
Thanks very much for the offer, really appreciated.
As I said, I know it’s a big ask but what I require is for the Chronological casualty listing section to be searched for any accident involving a DH6 while serving with a training unit. I suspect that this could be quite a long drawn out process.
I then need the following information for each please:
Date
Name of casualty(ies)
Training Unit
Serial of aircraft involved.
I think the section of the book holding all this information is around 120 pages long. However, to narrow things down, I believe the first DH6 casualty during training occurred on the 12th of July 1917.
Hope this helps.
PM Sent.
