Avro 504N Question…

I was surprised to read the other day that the Shuttleworth Collection’s Avro 504K started life as a model “N”. That said, can anyone confirm if the Avro 504N (Avro Lynx) were remanufactured from Avro 504K airframes?

Best Wishes

David Ogilvy’s book …..

The Shuttleworth Collection (Airlife 1982) says

“Built in 1918 as a K (H5199), converted in RAF service to a 504N and later civilianised as G-ADEV……………. Subsequently reconverted to original K standard by Avro apprentices for the Collection”.

So, was the Shuttleworth Collection’s H5199 an original “K” converted to an “N”, then converted back to a “K”? Confused…?

P.S. Does anyone know where one can get hold of a Armstrong-Siddeley Lynx engine…?

The Avro ‘Putnam’ mentions ……

a production run of 598 Ns between 1925 – March 1932 and that Govt economies meant that nearly 100 RAF examples of the N were met by “converting exceedingly ancient 504Ks to N standard”.

There’s also mention that Canadian Vickers Ltd converted at least 14 504Ks to N for the RCAF.

From Avro: an Aircraft Album, published by Ian Allan 1973 (page41):

“Ten further orders were eventually placed for 504Ns making a total of 572 built for the RAF before production ceased with K2423 in 1932. In addition a large number of 504Ks were rebuilt and re-engined to make them into 504Ns.”

[Edit] Apparently rebuilt 504Ks retained full-chord ailerons, while new-build 504Ns had tapered ailerons. It’s an Armstrong-Siddeley Lynx, BTW.
