Just had a thought

and before anyone else chips in-yes it did hurt:D. Can someone please explain the difference between the radial engined Tempest (apart from the mods required for carrier ops) and the Sea Fury. More to the point is the Fury then a denavalised Sea Fury?

Thanks for that. I forgot I’ve got that book in my library too. Mind you the fact that I’m at work and the book’s at home it woouldn’t have been a lot of help, I’d probably forgotten what it was I wanted to know by the time I get home tonight.

Can’t help much other than to say…

been delving in the old book collection, a quote in “Typhoon & tempest at war” says about the Sea Fury ” This aircraft had been discussed between Camm and the Air Ministry as the “Tempest Light Fighter”, well before the Tempest itself became operational. Basically, it was a Tempest with a reduced wing area, a Centaurus engine and a greatly improved view over the nose for the pilot to facilitate deck landings”

Something quite lovely about the late Hawker Piston engined designs though, just bulging with power and strength, at the end of airframe development etc – would love to see a Tempest V or VI in the air and I get a bit of a sulk with Hendon’s example in the TT scheme…:( still, each to their own….
