Sixty years and one day on. Screwball

Yesterday I meant to post a brief note that it was the anniversary of the somewhat suspicious death of George Beurling.

In my opinion possibly the archetypal fighter pilot.

If you know little or nothing of him please take the time to do a little Googling. He should not go unremembered.

Nor should any of them.

Moggy

As you will have gathered I was away from the computer yesterday. Even then I managed to visit Abbeville, home of several of the legendary BoB 109 units

George “Buzz” Beurling no doubt a great fighter pilot in my view, great eyesight, great deflection shooter and great flyer, sadly misrepresented somewhat because of his demeanor, but I always thought if the RCAF did give him his own 4 ship element as he wished , well he may have shot down many more aircraft. Definitely a true character for sure.

For those who don’t know much about this great rebel ( he must have given his superiors headaches ), there’s quite a good review of him in Wikipedia.
One thing that made me smile was him having to return to Canada by convoy to retrieve his birth certificate, like today, he obviously didn’t trust the postal system.
Just out of interest, I notice he was buried with honours at Mount Carmel, Israel, was this something that was bestowed apon any pilot, Jewish or Gentile, as long as they were prepared to fight for the emergent State of Israel.
