IWM London

Does anyone have a current list or photos of aircraft “bits and pieces” held by the IWM in London (or elsewhere?). When I was last there, they had panels from Lancasters R5692, JB345, LM584 and PD426 as well as the front fuselage section of DV372,

Thanks Andy. I went to East Kirby last January and it was so dark in the hangar there that I had to use a torch to read the captions on the displays!

Camera restrictions at IWM North

Hi Jim,

I was told when we went in that if we wanted to use a camera we had to get a permit from the desk on the way in to do so. This wouldn’t have cost us anything however. We were also told that we couldn’t use a tripod and that flash photography was forbidden. With the general light levels within the building, certainly with the camera I had on me at the time for my recent visit, that effectively meant I couldn’t take photos.

Hess Bf110

The IWM London has one engine and a rear fuselage section from the Hess Bf110. I last saw it in person in 2006; photos here: http://www.museum-explorer.org.uk/show.php?page=exhibit&c=15&m=10&y=27&q=&e=339&t=5. I also have photos of the sections at the IWM London in 2000 on the same page. I’ve not been back to the IWM London since 2006, but assume that it’s still there.

I visited the IWM north a couple of weekends ago and they now have a small section of the fuselage of the Hess Bf110 on display as well (marked up when we went as a new display). The restrictions on photography stopped me getting a photo of it however.

Nice pics. So the Bf110 is back in Lambeth then? As I said, the last time I saw it was at the Manchester Museum of Science & Technology shortly after the aviation gallery opened in the 1980s but it had gone when I next visited Manchester in 1998.

Eighteen months ago or so I saw the Lancaster cockpit (DV372?) on display on the first-floor balcony of the new atrium, the rear fuselage and one engine of the Hess Bf110 were on the same balcony.

Some photos from the web:

The other engine is (was?) at the East Fortune Museum of Flight.

Many thanks Andy. There were lots of similar items there in 1959 that I didn’t make specific notes about. Two I do remember were parts of Rudolf Hesse’s Bf110 (which was in Manchester the last time I saw it during the 1980s) and a swastika-bedecked fin from. I think, an He111.

As far as I know, we don’t have photos of the panels you mention, nor, to be honest, do I remember seeing such panels when I was there last (though this was some time ago).

I know that the RAF Museum at hendon has some nose panels on display, but I suspect again that we do not have photos of those unfortunately.

If I do find that I have photos, I’ll let you know.

Thanks Andy,
The panels in question were nose-art from the Lancs in question and highly interesting items I remember. It was 1959 when I last saw them and they were a bit beyond my old box camera at the time. I just wondered if someone might have some photos of them perhaps and whether they were still on display?

IWM London contents

We have a list of most of the contents of IWM London at http://www.museum-explorer.org.uk/show.php?page=museum_content&c=15&m=10&y=27, however we’ve not gone as far as listing panels from aircraft etc.
