59 Years Ago Today !

On the 13th of May 1949 Roland Beamont took to the air for the first time in Canberra prototype VN799,who would of thought then that the Canberra would go on to be a world wide sales success,a multi record breaker and serve with the RAF for 55 years.

Its a pity that there are no airworthy examples in the UK to mark this anniversary and next years 60th !

We do have Raspberry Cranberry WT333 which is maintained in full fast taxi ground running condition, due to run next at the Bruntingthorpe open day May 25th.

cheers baz

Canberra Anniv

Every year on May 13th the Canberra Assoc holds a get-together for ex-Canberra blokes (and friends). Usually this is held in the Mess at RAF Wyton and it was there again this year. Goodly gathering of over 80 people, aircrew and ground crew, old friends and new friends (and, increasingly, absent friends). A slowly dwindling repositry of Canberry experience, knowledge and tales of world-wide daring-do with the Canberra.

Looks like I got my work Cut out to get WH887 ready for the 60th Birthday
next year, I reckon it shuld be a Canberra Special celibration ๐Ÿ˜€
will Cockpitfest 2008 be the year of the Canberra ????

Itโ€™s a Hunter Special at Cockpitfest 2008

โ€œPrevious participants should by now have received their 2008 information packs and we would like to confirm that ALL types of aircraft cockpits are welcome and will be on view to the public.

However the 2008 event will also have a special sub-section of cockpits – a special Hawker Hunter line-up. This will form part of a tribute to the 22 ship Hunter loop of 1958 and the line-up will feature Hunter cockpits going from F1 through to the high numbered export versions of this iconic British fighter. Hunter cockpits already promised are: at least one F1, F2, at least one F6, T7, FGA9 and GA11โ€

More here http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/news.php

Who knows what they might arrange in 2009, but the last time Newark did Canberras was 2005 http://www.airsceneuk.org.uk/airshow05/canberra/canberra.htm

It would effect the Sea Vixen aswel as the many Hunters if there is some sort of CAA restriction on RR Avon operations.

Could the issue be more to do with the Canberras’ poor record of single engine performance and handling, after having an engine failure?

Yes,and i think the CAA may have some issues with future Avon operation.

I would have thought that there was some design/manufacture back-up still.

for a old girl i cant think of any other aircraft that has served with HM forces with such a long service record,
she is a tribute to her designers and the services she provided.

What happened to Coventry’s B.2 Wk163, is it not flying anymore?

As far as i know WK163 had an engine fail on the ground just before take off, this engine had not long been refurbished so there is some question as to why it failed.

Wk163 has not flown for at least a year, and it could be sometime yet !

maybe someone in the know could provide more info.

pretty sure that they are all civillian owned, having been put up for auction when they were retired. my understanding is that 134 has been put on the civil register (G-OMHD) and will fly again sometime soon, just wondering how soon is soon ๐Ÿ™‚ the canberra truly was a hell of an aircraft! i mean, the americans bought it didnt they!
