Yes I know “Top 5” etc lists have been done to death, but here’s another perspective. What if you asked someone who knew practically nothing of warbirds?
Miss BR knows very little about aviation. Just like BR knows very little about her hobby (horses).
Last bank holiday I took her around Cosford, her first ever visit to an aviation museum. Miss BR particularly liked the Mosquito out of all the aircraft there and swooned for the Vulcan (she used to live near Brunty). She was also quite keen on the Japanese flying bombs (oddly)
I have been having a clear out over the weekend. I have a bunch of FlyPasts dating 2002-2004 that I will probably chuck out. Only last week was herself given an old copy of FlyPast (May 2007) by her parents, which had been left in their holiday home by a previous occupant. Upon which she read parts of the mag and seemed quite interested. The featured P-40 looked “quite cool”
So I asked today if she would like to borrow any of the FlyPasts before I chucked them out. Selection was made on a “most sexiest” cover photo and three were chosen.
So here’s the slant, a total novice in knowledge but a lady with a keen eye reckons the sexiest warbirds based on cover photos from 2002-2004 are:
1. Spitfire
2. P-38 Lightning
3. P-47 Thunderbolt
She rejected many overs including the Hurricane, Mustang and Lancaster.
Throwing the Vulcan and Mosquito into the pot, the results are:
1. Mosquito
2. Vulcan
3. Spitfire (though this may be second if she was able to hear one in real life)
4. P-38 Lightning
5. P-47 Thunderbolt
I think my other half has quite good taste ๐

I think the F-4 definately counts as a warbird these days-The Collings Foundation have got one doing airshows haven’t they??
By: Nashio966 - 10th May 2008 at 20:36
Having thought about it more, though im not sure weather it counts as a warbird, but i really think that the Phantom FG.2 is rather attractive, also the buccaneer S.2, though all of this coming from a geek that thinks certain aircraft are more attractive than certain women, though it can go either way  ๐

Nothing wrong with that at all!

Sexiest warbird?
What, nobody mentioned the Hunter yet, I see? Barely a straight line there, all curves!
I think certainly the Mark IX Spitfire (all the original curves with the power and armament to go with it). I have always liked the HP Victor to, esp. Mark I and the B. variants before all the Refeulling/Tanking apparatus was added (sorry Andre Tempest, Lust Lindy is still one of my favourites!)

Just show the lady in your life a pic of an F-82G (carrying what the crews called the radar “dong”), and she’ll know exactly what’s on your mind. ๐

i took my ex to a Mildenhall show one year after mentioning the SR-71 (Ok, more than once!)- and when it took off she was in tears! ( i like to think it was because she thought it was as awesome as i do!)

I think you guys’ spouses may be a bit too experienced/educated to be responsive to the original post, judging by some of the responses.
My mother and my 4-year-old both favor the Lockheed P-38 most of all, for its instant recognizability, sleekness, and interesting geometry.
That about exhaust’s mom’s ability to differentiate WWII aircraft despite decades of exposure. My 4-year-old is a little more discerning and also likes Corsairs, for the same reasons as the P-38 (well, except it isn’t as sleek).
I find that most who are unfamiliar with warbirds are utterly unable to identify, let alone appreciate, the elliptical wings and other aesthetic features of the Spitfire. If it has “targets” painted on it, that’s what they assume it is. Just like anything with hinomarus on it is a Zero (the white rim around the hinomaru is even commonly supposed to be a numeral zero).

Not quite a historic warbird, but I’ve found that ladies have a special affinity towards the Harrier. I had some of my photographs decorating a friends stall at an airshow and it was amusing to watch the guys come in and scrutinize all my various pics whereas their partners would go straight to a picture of a Harrier in the hover.
After speaking to a few female friends it appears that the Harrier, sat on a dirty great big column of thrust, with all the associated noise and tangible power, seems to stir some rather basic feelings/associations. I kid you not!
As a ladie I quite agree, I’m very partial to harriers ๐
My list would be in no particular order
Dakota
P-38 Lightning
Sea Vixen
Lincoln
Vulcan
Honerable mention to the Spitfires.

I would have thought that in most discerning minds sexy a/c could only date from WW2 and be American, to match the popularised image of the charismatic pilots that flew them, so wer’e probably talking P-51, ‘Cadillac of the Skies’ and B-17 here.
As far as my missus is concerned though, it’s the B2 Spirit, she loves that aircraft to bits. She hasn’t been to that many airshows but has seen the blooming thing three times. She nearly passed out when we went to the last Mildenhall Air Fete and it was actually parked up, I had to bolt down my Polish sausage and walk half a mile through torrential rain so she could get soaked and drool over it.
