For those interested in the fate of Bentley Priory (former Fighter Command HQ, now sold by RAF and to be converted to residential area), see this news post. It would seem that there’s a chance for a museum to be established in part of the mansion.

Here is a link to the application form submitted http://www.ukplanning.com/ukp/doc/Application%20Form-5749329.pdf?extension=.pdf&id=5749329&location=VOLUME5&contentType=application/pdf&pageCount=11
It shows 1905 sq. metres of proposed institutional use (I believe this is the museum) and refers to proposed opening times for the museum. The parts of the mansion proposed to be demolished date from the 1950’s.

Hi Pete,
I’ve spent many days at Bentley Priory since the middle of March, documenting photographically the site for the RAF Museum, both above and below ground. The place is most certainly not riddled with bunkers, exciting though that would be.

do you think that the developers want us to know that anything historic will interfere with their plans, I’ve seen it all before, I can assure you.
Pete – if its any solace to you I can tell you that the architects appointed, Robert Adam Architects are one of the most historically informed and sensitive firms anywhere in the world. I worked for them as an associate for seven years and I know that Robert and his team will be very concerned to protect and enhance all aspects of this historic property and its site. Robert is a great admirer of Sir John Soane and is one of the worlds foremost classical architects. Hope that is of some encouragement.

I printed off the Suplementary Planning Documents and asscociated Appendicies yesterday without any problems. Interesting reading. Don’t have the link handy, sorry.
There are no bunkers under the listed main house, only cellars.
Why would Harris be spinning in his grave by the way?
I remember seeing a house connected with Bomber Command for sale recently; he’s proably dizzy already.
Sorry, I’m reading a book about Bomber Command at the moment, I also have two major clients called Harris that I’m working flat out for, my head is full of that name, aargh.
Ok I mean Dowding, is that Ok, don’t you believe that the place isn’t riddled with bunkers, do you think that the developers want us to know that anything historic will interfere with their plans, I’ve seen it all before, I can assure you.

Pete, would you be less concerned if it was being developed as social housing?
Sod that, would you want to pay £450K for a flat and have to keep feeding the ill treated horses from the re-housed pykies in the next block.

It’s unlikely that the market that they will aim at will want to encourage a museum with visitors, it will be all security gates and coded exclusive entry, no doubt about it.

Well, I did attempt to view the plans via the Harrow Council website, but it is the worst planning site I’ve ever seen and got nowhere.
Unfortunately, I can’t therefore comment on the proposals, but it sounds ominous to me. I’m assuming that the house is listed which could hopefully complicate things for the developers. This may at least prevent them from pouring concrete down the historic bunkers, I can assure you that this is the sort of thing that they are likely to do, I’ve personally seen it happen, even to listed buildings with historic cellars.
If they are planning to build flats, they will no doubt want to make them pretty exclusive and expensive in that area in order to make the highest return. It’s unlikely that the market that they will aim at will want to encourage a museum with visitors, it will be all security gates and coded exclusive entry, no doubt about it.
Harris must be spinning in his grave.

Bentley Priory Museum
Dont bank on the museum, this sort of announcement is a ploy to sweeten
the locals and planners, you will probably find the planning will be approved
and then the museum somehow never happens!
