hi all, hoping some of you can help me out here. I’m trying to find out some more about this chap, his name is listed on my local war memorial in Shefford Beds.
All I could find was this on the excellent roll-of honour website.
http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Bedfordshire/SheffordRollofHonour.html
Flight Lieutenant, 155236, 247 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve who died on Friday 18th August 1944. Age 22. Son of William and Ada Ellen Guthrie, of Shefford. Buried in Bayeux War Cemetery, Calvados, France. Grave II. F. 17.
It would be very nice to find out more about Flt Lt Guthrie, how he won his DFC and some more about 247 Squadron in WW2. Where can I find this info – Hendon?
Please help 🙂

Dear all,
thank you all so much for your help and information. I’m so pleased to learn more about Dick Guthrie. Sadly seems his DFC was posthumous.
I will endeavour to learn more locally and any further information (or where to find it) would be most gratefully received.

Dick Guthrie was one of the Flight Commanders on 247 Sqn at the time (posted on to the Sqn on 26 July 44, from 181 Sqn), His aircraft was hit by Flak while diving from 4000 feet to attack German forces trying to escape the Falaise Pocket, the Typhoon 1b MP144 ‘ZY-G’ caught fire and the tail unit came off, the aircraft then dived into the ground with Guthrie still on board. The Typhoon was issued to the unit from 51 MU (most likely via 83 GSU during the month it was shot down, the book doesn’t give an exact day).

155236 A/FL Richard Guthrie, RAFVR 181Sqn. London Gazette:20/10/1944:4814 Citation Reads:- Flight Lieutnant Guthrie has executed many sorties, mostly against heavily defended areas. In July 1944,he led his section in two attacks on gun positions in the Borquebus area. In spite of the most intense anti-aircrat fire,Flight Lieutenant Guthrie pressed home his attack with the greatest determination.Although his aircraft sustained damage he flew it to base.He is a brave and skiful pilot.
