Mew Gull Replica At Hendon

Congratulations must go to the RAF Museum, Hawker Restorations/AJD Engineering and posthumously to Alex Henshaw for bringing a Mew Gull to Hendon, she is quite spectacular especially when you consider she is a replica.

Judge for yourselves…

A really nice touch, a mannequin of the great man in the cockpit

This is what impressed me the most, the completeness of the cockpit

I took some photos of the one at Breighton the other day, a very special aircraft. Alex Henshaw even signed the aircraft!

And also one of the most beautiful racers ever built.

Not much better when in the air either!! 😮

Actually Alex Henshaw used to ‘taxi’ by climbing out of the cockpit and walking alongside, with his hand on the throttle and nudging the tail in the direction he wanted the aeroplane to go!

But it was built with one thing in mind – to go as fast and far as possible. Its London-Capetown-London record (still unbeaten by any light aircraft) and victories in air races prove that it was very good at what it was designed to do.

A stunning reproduction and a fine tribute to one of Britain’s greatest pilots.
As TT said, Alex himself would have been proud.

Don’t forget though, thanks to Taff Smith at Breighton, not only does the ORIGINAL still exist, it flies regularly. That’s how it should be for such a fine aeroplane! :diablo:

Last time I was at the RAF Museum there were plans on display for three British pre-WW2 civilian aircraft arranged together in Milestones, IIRC it was a Miles aircraft, the Mew Gull, and, I believe, the Moth

Will the relevance of it be lost on many visitors?? It’s a wonderful guesture but I still wonder where exactly the RAFM is going with it’s collecting policy .

Did Skysport build it? I thought Hawker Restorations/AJD Engineering were building a replica for Hendon?

Hi Chris,

You are right, my mistake. I will amend.

Still a damn fine product wherever she hails from.

Fantastic – there’s also a Miles going into ‘Miles’tones too! Didn’t know it was put in so soon, i’ll have to nip down tomorrow. There’s a few more of the excellent mannequins under build to complement the displays too
