Hello
Does anyone have any information on the following:-
FO J G Clermonts RCAF from 175 sqd “crashing in flames” on 7/5/44 in Typhoon JR 257 HH-w.
Aircraft crashes in Hampshire site simply list the crashsite as being 3 miles outside Emsworth. I have found a memorial plaque in the grounds of Stansted House near Rolands Castle Hampshire stating that he came down near to there.
I would appreciate any information, as I often walk my dogs past the plaque and would like to know the full story (if possible).
Many thanks Bradley

I dont have an actual position for the crash site itself.
The plaque is situated on what is known locally as “The lady’s mile” which in fact is the original lawn of nearby Stansted House.
The plaque is right at the opposite end of the “lawn” which always made me wonder if the pilot may have tried to attempt a landing (the lawn is over a mile long and approx 100 meters wide).
If you search on google earth against postcode PO9 6DX then pan West a bit, you will see the lady’s mile . The plaque is at the Rowlands Castle end.
Stansted house is listed as Hampshire.

From local Police and other reports:
7 May 1944
Typhoon 175 Squadron
Fg Off Justin Gerard CLERMONT (J14545) from Toronto. Aged 23
Aircraft was JR257 HH-W
Aircraft caught fire five minutes after take-off from forward airfield. Aircraft seen to dive, level out and then crashed and exploded at 20.15hrs.
Clermont is buried at Brookwood, Surrey.
Hope this helps. As a matter of interest, this is right on the Sussex/Hants border. Can you tell me which county boundary it is actually within??
