I read on flightline UK that the lysander will appear at RIAT. I think it is a pitty that she won’t appear at legends

Nice idea, but it’s pretty exhausting to go to two major venues back to back.
If I did, say Legends on the saturday, well thats fine, it’s only about half an hour from here, but I normally get back feeling pretty knackered, then its batteries to recharge, butties to make and to miss the traffic getting into RIAT, I’d have to leave at about 5:00am from here.
The last time I went to Fairford, I left here at 6:00 and had to make a very high speed run to get there before the traffic closed in, I only just made it too. Getting back from there wasn’t much fun either, trying to be clever and miss the traffic, I went off for an evening meal in a quiet Cotswold pub, but then I recall being stuck on the M25 at midnight and not getting home till 1:00am.
The other important item is the cost, if I took, say, Hungarian Solly and the father in law to both events, considering petrol, general payouts, grub, beers, souvenirs, programmes, I doubt whether I’d get much change out of £250!
I have to e-mail Hungary with all this information and at the moment, I’m considering that it might be better for Solly to come over during the Spring bank holiday period and take him off to the Military Pagent at OW instead, he’ll be knocked out by the Shuttleworth historics, he’s seen the DX Autumn Airshow, and that was pretty good last year, why not something different, he’s only been over to the UK once, and thought that what our country had to offer in all it’s forms was pretty fantastic.
He likes his steam trains too, last year I took him for a trip on the North Norfolk Railway and he was beside himself with that.
The Spring bank holiday weekend coincides with the 40th anniversary of the end of steam show at the NRM at York, he would pass out at the prospect of seeing 4 A-4 pacifics together, and having friends up north too, it wouldn’t be a problem as far as accomodation is concerned, apart from all that, railway events tend to be considerably cheaper too.
I just have a feeling that Legends won’t be the same this year, I will still go to it, but having told someone that, who is prepared to make an effort to get here from the other side of Europe, I don’t want him to be dissapointed, after all, he’s seen a spitfire tailchase.

I’ll tell you this much, living where you do I’d be on the road much earlier for RIAT. I only live just outside Oxford and I’d be on the road about 5.30, 6.00 at the latest. Still I guess that’s the advantage of local knowledge, I know what the traffic gets like around the are and when so I plan my departure timews accordingly.

RIAT dull? dont know how you work that out! I dont know any other show that have done some of the displays and formations that they have. This year looks to be corker as not only have they got the Brazilian team but also the Turkish Stars who are worth seeing just for the commentry! as well as the F-22 and dont think “well I can see that at farnborough” as its only there on the Monday!
As for endless KC 135s and Hercs well when was the last time you went? The days of these are long gone!
I love both shows but as I have bought a week ticket to RIAT my hands are tied, still at least i’ll get to see the lizzy:D

Despite the fact i really like Lysander’s i will not be too worried if there is not one flying at Legends, After all Legends is the sum of all the Aircraft gathered not just one type.

Im seriously thinking of going Legends on Saturday and RIAT on the Sunday, But if i have to choose Legends would win everytime.

It would be a shame not to have one there this year.

Steve

Well there will actually be two. One is in the Airspace building dangling on display and the other will be in Building 66 with ARC. If you take a look at the latter you might get to see the superb workmanship being put in on this restoration by Smudge and his band of helpers before I get let loose on it and cover up all their hard work with my roll of fabric and collection of sharp pointy impliments. 😮

Legends every time….RIAT is dull, full of lots of the same stuff (endless Herks, KC135s etc)….Legends is smaller and far more intimate and sheer fun…the only time I really enjoyed legends was flying in in a Hawk!!

This clash of airshows is a nightmare

It’s probably the above words that had me fooled.

No problems with the lift to the airshow – you’ll just have to all squeeze onto the one remaining seat and ideally weigh no more than about 12 stone combined. With those small provisos – we are on our way.

No Peter, not particularly – I (part) own an aircraft 😮

My point was that you seem to have an issue with the two shows appearing over the same weekend – but I couldn’t understand how, if they’d been on consecutive weekends, it would have been any cheaper for you.

Moggy

Sorry, I obviously made my original reply unclear, there’s no way we could afford go to both airshows, I was hypothetically speaking in reply to the posting, mind you, I reckon you could easily land alongside the river here and give us all a lift to both shows, I’ll buy you a programme, promise.

Why is this important?

The cost would be identical if they weren’t back-to-back except the guys from Hungary would have two lots of air fares to pay surely?

You’re obviously very wealthy Moggy.

One day at Legends , one day at Riat.
Its actually a better deal for those who have a fair distance to travel to the South of England.

Aah, yes, would have done the same in my younger free and single days……

But, for me, this clash this year is a real bummer, as with todays ‘general life’ commitments, over the past 10 years or so, my yearly airshow diet has reduced down to just the 2 must see events, Legends and RIAT.

And so, this year with both on the same weekend, one is going to have to be kicked into touch………. 😡

Its a shame the Lysander isn’t at legends, but i’m sure there will be one or two other gems to look forward to!

So what happenened to the Sabena old timers lizzie from belgium? is that under restoration as well as the one with arco?

Any update on the arco example?

[QUOTE=Pete Truman;1231730]I’ve looked at the list of participating RIAT aircraft and can’t see a Lysander on their listing, and thats dated 1st March.

Its on the most recent FRIAT list as flying, still it could attend both shows.

Who’s idea was this, especially with it being the RAF’s 90th anniversary, couldn’t the voice of reason and logic have prevailed here, it’s going to affect both airshows, or does it make it more economic for international participants.

My thoughts exactly. Just what is there to gain from such a massive clash? It can hardly be economical? I thought money talks and if I was to have an airshow of major proportions I would do my absolute best to not make it compete with either RIAT or Flying Legends as it would mean economical disaster. As for this situation it’s like giants in the playground. Especially for Legends since it’s obvious many potential participants to Legends will go to RIAT.

But what do I know. 😀

… there’s always the OW display during the same period that could blow him away, looks as if the Lysander could be at that one too.
No contest is it.

I couldn’t see it either so I’m not sure were that information was got from.

I’d say that it is certain that the Lysander will be at it’s home airfield for the show on Sunday 1st June at Old Warden as it is the 1st of their Military Airshows. If the weather is good, your Cousin will see aircraft from at least the first 50 years of the RFC/RAF.
