I have planned my holiday to coincide with the Flying Legends airshow.
My trip will bring me up through England (sailing from France i think), over Duxford and west towards Wales and the ferry to Ireland.
Are there any suggestions for aviation museums along that route?
I can maximum visit two. Duxford was agreed upon with my girlfriend, who even said she would enjoy it. One extra museum might go as well, two would be taxing it (but possible), three is out of the question.
My main interest would be world war II aircraft, but i do like the early jets too.
What i don’t really care to see is: airliners, modern jets, modern GA and gliders.

Thanks for all your suggestions 😀
I have picked Cosford as my main visit (besides Flying Legends) and have a few as number two (if i’m allowed another, or for the home trip).
I have found this website usefull to check the individual museum:
http://www.britishaircraft.co.uk/museum.php
But unfortunatly its listed after counties, and i have no clue where most of the are. A a “point and click” map would have been easier.

there really needs to be a definitive list and map of aircraft/military museums across europe, i know whilst i have been away in europe i have passed close by to some great museums and was totally unaware of them until after i had returned. We’re talking about info for dummies like myself here!
Bob Ogden’s book (I have already mentioned) is split into countries. Each country’s listing starts with a map showing all the locations. You could photocopy each map and stick them all together to have one of the whole of Europe 🙂

If you are traveling from Duxford to Wales then Midland (Coventry) Air Museum and Cosford are both very short distances off the route. Both have good collections of early jet types – at Midland these include Meteor F4 & NF14, Vampire F1, Javelin, Seahawk, BP.111, F-86, F-100, F-101, T-33 (x2), SAAB J-29.

I would say the Fleet air arm museum at Yeolvilton is excellent especially the virtual carrier tour with the virtual buccaneer landing.
excellent

If you are heading west along the M4, to the ferry ports at Pembroke, Fishguard and Swansea, then I would recommend visiting the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton. Its not a big detour off the M4, and their website is at http://www.fleetairarm.com.

I noticed this when i went last year, walking from the tube station was so dangerous, some parts of the way there didn’t even seem to be any pavement, or you at least had to keep crossing backwards and forwards. Its not a short walk either, and thats from someone that walks a lot. Being such a major museum, you would think public transport links would be better
7 minutes is not a short walk? Thats how long it takes me from Colindale, or did you get off at Hendon:D
Pavement all the way. Turn left out of the station down to the roundabout, cross the road and just keep walking. Footpath all the way.

If you forget your camera there is one museum that comes to mind!

Coventry Air museum, and the small chance of seeing some of Air Atlantiques classic types will be only a small detour from your route from Duxford to wales .
About 3 miles from the M6 or around 7miles from the A5 .
Cosford as stated above is also only a few miles from the A5 and M54 heading for Wales. worth doing both places .

I think the walk is pretty short myself, although then again I live bang on halfway between the tube station and the museum so it probably doesn’t seem as far for me. The 303 bus goes past the entrance of the museum and the stop is outside the tube station, however it probably takes longer than walking as it goes on a magical mystery tour around the very scary council estate first!

Yep, the Battle of Britain experience is still a part of RAFM Hendon. One word of advice if visiting there from someone that lives right next to it (in fact if you go there via public transport you’ll walk past my house) – be very wary at night, and no one pays attention to the highway code, especially at pedestrian crossings!
