North Luffenham

Has anyone looked this base up on Google earth? The main runway looks like it has craters in it. I can spot a harrier and Phantom on the far side dispersal.

The Harrier is in one of the dispersal loops on the southern side of the field, just to the east of the north-south runway.

The craters are the results of the Airfield Explosive Ordnance Disposal Training Flight – the Hunter was used to train RAF/Army personnel on disarming Warsaw Pact aircraft that had defected.

I’ve looked on Google Earth and I can see the Phantom on the dispersal but not a Harrier. In the area where the two runways cross and the craters are I have seen what looks like a Hunter.

WOW, where did that goat thing come from?

I’ll stop bleeting on.

RAF North Luffenham does or did use the runways for training on defusing unexploded ordinance, the Phantom, Harrier and MIG, sorry Hawker Hunter may be used as decoys for recon.

When the Canadian Fighter-Jocks were at N Luffenham they woke up one morning to find a large white nanny-goat contentedly chomping the airfield grass (as nanny-goats seem to do!).
They rang Stamford Police and announced that they’d found “the lost white nanny-goat”. Stamford Police had no record of a “lost white nanny-goat”. Their advice was that, in the interim, if the Canadians would look after the nanny-goat then they, the Stamford Police, would “make enquiries”.
These enquries proved fruitless, so RCAF N Luffenham had to look after this beast. I am reliably informed (but have no proof!) that OC N Luff instituted The Order Of The White Goat. Officers, NCOs, or ORs, who had committed some infraction of the Rules were awarded ‘X’ days “I/C the Goat”!!!
Those were the days when humour was a part of Sqn/Stn life – rather than fearing the arrival of the ‘bean counters’!!

hi peter, on my google earth, it seems that the phantom is missing its outer starboard wing panel (confirmed by a quick look round). After a brief search on demobbed.org i found that the harrier in question is XV804 Harrier GR3
