I’m hoping that someone can recommend a good book with ISBN number on the Chipmunk during development and service as I’m trying to gen up as much as possible before getting deep into restoring my Chippax. A spot of Googling doesn’t seem to have thrown up much in the way of Chipmunk specific literature, so any further info would be greatly appreciated.

Without trying to hijack this thread I would be very interested to hear from anybody who has any archive photo’s of Chippys or pictures of non UK residents that they wouldn’t mind me hosting on my site. 🙂
This seems to have hit a rich vein and I’d echo the request for more pics. XM692 provided me with some photos of WP927, but I’d love to know if any more exist as I’d like to portray the aircraft in its RAF livery (silver with Trainer bands)

I have been following this thread the last day or two.
I checked DGH’s great site to see what happened to 7601M that used to sit in the Bicester Exhibition MU hangar. It was coded (on the instrument panel) “A”. According to UK Serials
http://www.ukserials.com/results.php?serial=WB
it was cn 0240 ex WB709, then to Sri Lanka as CT-103.
But http://www.daveharmsworth.co.uk/pages/chipmunksurvivors.html
says CT-103 is cn 0156.
What is the truth?
As far as I know…..
c/n 0156 was a new build Chipmunk serialled CT-103 thats was delivered as a batch of 12 to the Ceylon Air Force which then changed to the Sri Lanken Air Force. As I understand it she still survives at the SLAF Museum at Ratmalana.
c/n 0240 was built as WB709 and saw service with the RAF during the 1950’s until ending up with 10MU at Hullavington. In 1959 she was allocated the serial 7601M and became a travelling exhibit for recruitment purposes. She was then sold to the Kenyan Air Force in 1967.
If anybody knows anymore I would be very inetersted to hear it. 🙂

Both our Vamp XD599 and the Chippie are pretty camera shy (though we have at last found a couple of pics of the Vamp now!)

My apologies for going off topic for a mo.
But I just found two negatives of Vampire XD599 and would just like to help you, before I misplace them. AGAIN.
Do you already have photos of 599
1. In flight, CATS/A, 3/1969? side view?
2. in hangar/ or in front, CATCS/A Shawbury 11/70
If not, PM me wth your regular email address and I’ll send digital image.

Hi there –
Does ANYONE have a pic of WG419 in service!!!!????
TT
Well I gave it a TRY TT. Just went through 1400 Chipmunk negatives, (At present, they are only grouped according to “Chipmunk,” and not sorted into more specific groupings of Chipmunk…yet) and it seems WG419 was camera shy! 🙁
Closest I could find were a couple of WG420 from 1966-71 Bristol UAS, and WG 417 1969/70 8AEF Gaydon (Caydon? -smudged marking on envelope)& Shawbury.

Er….ahem, we havent actually got round to doing that yet.. 😮
however, we will probably use the same method as suggested by Dave
www.demobbed.org.uk/images/wp863.jpg
seems pretty straightforward to me.
Plus Dave (XM692) was flogging some chippie cockpit stuff on ebay a while back – praps he has a spare section you can ‘graft’ on….?

Thanks again for the input chaps.
TexanTomcat, have you got some photos of how you’ve sorted out the rear canopy rail? My fuselage has been chopped aft of the rear seat and is in need of a structural rebuild in that area.

Another good Chipmunk book is “Around the World at 90 Knots” by Squadron Leader Bill Purchase MBE.Published April 2000. Interesting tale of the three Chipmunks flying around the world.

Hopefully I will get time to put some more info on my website www.dhcchipmunk.com before to long.

Cracking site DGH. I now know what happened to some of the Chipies I flew in as an ATC cadet. I knew two were at Duxford but as for the third. Didnt know that had left our shores.

I will keep a watch on e-bay for you. Mu usual sources haven’t unearthed anything available at the moment.
Surprised that Janie has been absent from this discussion, definitely been under the radar recently!

Keep an eye on Ebay for a copy of the Chipmunk manual – the Blue covered de Havilland book seems to come up reasonably regularly.
I can copy it for you if required.
