Last flight of Victor XA939

The last flight of XA939 was into ‘RAF’ Catterick on 29th March, 1976. Check the photo of the runway, only 3300 feet and bounded by the A1 and the river!

Read the report by the pilot, Tony Cunnane!

The IWM stripped out all of the flight deck instruments from both aircraft a few days after they touched down.

actually, so did we…… a few car loads (probably a Vauxhall Viva) of stuff went to make 319 into a live aircraft again….

There were also two or three Vulcans delivered to Catterick in the 80’s. They were spares recovered! To an extent anyway….

Thanks John. I often wondered if they were burnt somewhat intact or not.

Owing to the nature of the way the goverment ran the funding for the RAF then each time an airframe went to the scrap mans torch or the fire dump, they were heavily spares recovered.

Spares that could be recovered to be used again and also other spares that could be used a ground instructional equipment were recovered in some cases leaving an empty shell for disposal.

John.

Was 939 spares recovered at all before the burn? I always wondered about that when flying aircraft are sent for fire practice.

Victor XA939

i have some photos somewhere showing the remains of XA939 in 1982 on the pan at catterick very sad to view,as the scrapmans nibbler tore the remains into managable lumps, great account of its final landing, pity there are no pictures of this event or are there?

Interesting account of the flight… well worth a read.

I like the bit about them stopping the traffic on the A1 for 15 minutes while he sorted himself out for the landing…
