BBMF and CWH Lanc questions….

Firstly a BBMF question.

There’s a chap on a modelling forum I use that reckon’s it’s a rule on the BBMF that pilots turn their aircraft 90* to the runway prior to take off because they get a better view to make sure all’s clear before proceding onto the active for take-off.
He says it’s something to do with one of the Spits nearly having a head-on some years ago due to ATC cocking it up.

Has this actually happened with a BBMF Spit?

Is this rule actually in place?

I would have thought it very good practice indeed to do this anyway to make sure nothing’s coming before turning onto the active whether you’re a BBMF pilot or not.
Each time I’ve flown(always in stuff where I’m alongside or you can see the pilot)the pilot has always had a damn good look round and not just relied an ATC’s clearance before entering onto the active.

CWH Lanc question.

On the same said modelling forum, the rumour is rife that the CWH’s Lanc is coming over, will be flown with the BBMF Lanc and will (just possibly)both land at East Kirkby,or at least do a fly past and all three Lancs will be used in the filming of the “new:mad: 😡 😡 ” Dambusters film!!!!.

What do you reckon gents?,fact or fiction?

Aviation related costs wouldn’t even dent the first day’s takings at the box office. However, with the advances in CGI, who needs to film multiple a/c any longer?

i think the whole idea of flying such a valuable plane over a large section of water is slightly dangerous, but as the new tfc tf51 proved it is possible. i would imagine that the only way it would come over if mr jackson and his backers funded the whole trip. How much would that cost? $1million perhaps?

Hey up Mark, I havn’t heard anything about FM213 coming over but I can keep praying. On landing a Lanc at EK I asked the question to Mike Chatterton after a NX611 taxi run and he said that wasn’t happy with the length of hard runway that is left, take off would be OK though. I havn’t been to EK since the opening of the grass runway so I don’t know its dimentions or alignment, sounds like a good Boys day out in the spring/summer what do you say?

Just as I suspected.

I’d not read anything here or heard any excited noises from cousin Spadegrip.

Believe me,he’d have been singing from Woodie Spa’s church steeple(he’d have made the journey’specially from S-o-T to do it)at the prospect of CWH’s and “our” Lanc in formation, never mind landing at EK to pay Jane a visit.

Many thanks for the info on the attempt to mate AB910 with a rampant Harvard.
I’d completely forgotten about that incident.

Like we say,it really does make sense to have a good look around before entering onto the active and not just to leave it to ATC.

My view…..fiction.

…….or rather wishfull thinking that’s turned into Chinese Wispers perhaps…:p

There was serious discusions a few years ago of the CWH Lanc coming over in 2005 for the 60th VE/VJ events…… but in the end it didn’t happen…:(

I suppose if anything will provide the funds for the trip, filming would, but I still don’t think it’ll happen……thought it was stated the ‘remake’ was going to use CGI, with ground close ups using Just Jane……???

I cannot see the BBMF Lanc ever landing at EK, I have no idea of flying procedure though, as I’m not a pilot, nor will ever likely to be. The thought of landing a rarity like City Of Lincoln on a length of grass, might just be out of the bounds of reality. Is the Canadian Lanc definately coming over? I did not think anything would be set in stone yet.

Sound thing as standard with a tail dragger and limited (nil?) forward visibility always hold at 90 degrees to takeoff for a final check before lining up

Mark – on the 90 degree turn, this thread should add some context: http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=75638

The latest I heard was that the CWH Lanc wouldn’t be over this year.
