Olive Green Merlins?

Can anyone shed any light on why this CSU filter is painted olive green?
I do have recollections of seeing a Merlin this colour but can`t recall where (age I`m afraid!)
This one is probably ex-Staravia and will date back to the 1950s, I am wondering if it could be a civil Avro York scheme?
