I have lots of fond memories of Wombleton from my Microlight flying years, and I posted a few stories about the aerodrome in the Haunted Airfields thread.
I hadn’t realised that the place had fallen into disuse although I do recall someone on this forum saying he was having difficulty in contacting the proprietor.
I hope the tower gets a sensitive refurbishment and enjoys a long life in a new role. I hope the “ghost” stays on too!
Pistonrob, I agree with you, when viewing the runways, dispersals and perimeter tracks from the balcony of the tower, it was very easy to visualise the Halifaxes and crews going about their daily routines and a night time wander around the perimeter track was definitely spooky!
I have a full copy of the Operational Record Book for RCAF Wombleton; the officer who compiled it was obviously fond of the place and it reads like someone’s daily diary. It brings the place to life again.
Good luck for the future Wombleton!
