Canberra Suez 1956 Court-Martial

Hi
A college at work heard a radio programe about Suez 1956.
A bit he heard was about a Canberra pilot against the war who let this undercarrige up on his ready to go Canberra aircraft.

Anybody any ideals if the storys true and where it happened ?

Greetings,

Just spoken to my Dad who was a Canberra Nav on 35Sqn and was there when it happened! The story goes that the squadrons were all fuelled/armed and ready to go then whilst taxiing out one pulled up the undercarrage. This spoilt the nights activities somewhat as the guys behind him could not taxi past and they then had to try and remove a fuelled / armed B2. The guy was really lucky not to blow himself and the rest of the Cyprus Canberra force based at Nicosia up with him.

The only bit to add to the story is that the pilot was placed under house arrest and shipped back to the UK where he was offered quite a few jobs by other folk who at the time dissagreed with the Suez campagne.

cheers

Cliff

Its true

I used to work with a Canberra Nav involved in the Suez party and he told me the story is true – he witnessed it.

True, it was on PPRuNe, seem to recall the truth was closer to the fact that the pilot cocked-up then tried to make out it was a political gesture – this from a well respected ‘tame jurno’ who I think hangs out here on the modern (dark) side of this very forum

I believe that this topic was discussed on PPRUNE some time back, IIRC the jockey lifted the gear lever on the runway somewhere on Cyprus in a line of aircraft ready to go on the runway. This is off the top of my head without checking so apologies in advance if this is not wholly correct

I reckon LesB will know the full story……….

It happened in Cyprus – the story of it is documented somewhere on the net.
