Vulcans in Northeast Thailand (1967-68)

Hello –

A member on The Nostalgia Forum (TNF) which is one of several on the Atlas
F1 bulletin board, suggested I visit this forum. We primarily discuss historic Grand Prix and sports-racing cars but occasionally someone starts a topic involving historic aircraft – most recently, the flight of Avro Vulcan XH558.

I’ve also googled around a bit and found a website called http://www.avrovulcan.org.uk/ and posted an inquiry there but thought maybe someone here might be able to provide information as well about about an RAF Vulcan air field that I came across in Northeast Thailand in either 1967 or 68? We were returning from the RTA base at Ubon after picking up concrete and REBAR. They were located north of Ubon, probably on Hwy 88, but my brain cells have deleted that data. I do remember that their camp and aircraft were not visible from the road.

My team met a very friendly and gracious British NCO there who offered us a few beers while one of our trucks was being repaired. I noticed that he was wearing jump wings so we got on quite well together and shared a few interesting stories. I don’t recall him not telling us much about what he or the Vulcan were doing in the middle nowhere but then I’m sure we were just as vague about our presence in the area.

Just a foggy old memory that I’d like some help clearing up a bit. It’s impossible to mistake the beautiful profile of the Vulcan, in the air or on the ground, so maybe I wasn’t dreaming.

Whether anyone can help or not I’m going to thank my friend on TNF for sending me here. I have already enjoyed many of the topics being discussed here and plan on reading more and contributing what little I may about the history of military aviation. Please keep in mind that I was Army, and relied on aviation mainly for air support, supply, and the occasional drop.

Best regards and thank you —
