The 15th of November 2007 is the fiftieth anniversary of the Short Solent crash at Chesil down, on the Isle Of Wight. So far as i am aware there is no memorial to the 43 souls that perished that dreadful night. I have an interest, as my late father was a first officer with the airline at the time of the accident, and could have been on that flight, but fortunately was not rostered for that trip. It really shook him, as he lost a number of good friends. Has any sort of memorial been erected at the site, or thought been given to one? I would be interested in any ones recollections of the event, and would like to see some form of plaque erected at or nearby the crash site. I have the ability in my business to create an etched plate or slate panel, this could be mounted on a plinth or post. What are the bye laws in erecting a memorial, is planning required, what would the present landowners view be to such a proposal? Your thoughts please.

Thanks for the link, wish I’d read your last sentence first, the heading for the item is ‘An emotional return.’
This is the item on E-bay, just shows you never know what to throw away!

Interestingly there was an appeal for memorys of the incident on tonights local BBC South Today, TV programme. See the ‘Tell Tom’ feature on the BBC South Today website.
Also see ebay item 6610774699 this an original soliciters letter relating to the crash. It has been up for grabs for quite a while with no takers. (no I am not the seller!).
Cheers, Chumpy.

Hello again, I agree that a memorial should be erected about this tragic event. This was probably the beginning of the end for Aquila and for those less familiar with the accident, the details are below.

There is another memorial on the Isle of Wight and this represents the crash of the DC-3 on 7th May, 1953 probably a lesser known accident although it happened more recently. A very interesting web site which may give you some ideas.
