yellow/black stripes on Canberra (photo please)

Hi all

For a painting project i am trying to find out if the RAF target tug canberras displayed there registration numbers underneath. Googling has only thrown up photos of one now in civils hands. This has no reg underneath. I have also found a photo of a model which has the reg under both wings and a navy canberra with it under just one wing. My example is going to be RAF. Does anyone know if they displayed none, one or two?

Thanks in advance

Steve

BTW Lindys, the colour shot of WJ721 in camo is how they looked when relatively fresh from painting.

I did wonder what a Canberra was supposed to look like! I assumed they were all corroded to death…..peeling paint…..badly fitting wings………;) 😀

I have pictures of CR,CT,CW,CUand CQ all without underwing serials whilst with 100 sqdn, I also have WJ680 when serving on 7 sqdn without serials although it is not my copyright.

You can’t see 7 sqns WJ680 serial in that pic, that is partly the problem as the tip tanks and winches obscure the serial.
As I said above, posssibly some of the later 100 sqn machines didn’t show their serials as the RAF had done away with underwing serials by then. However for the most part of their service they wore them.
The pictures below arn’t that brilliant for showing the serials, but they are there.

That pic looks like Mawgan from Treloy line, soz for the mis ident.
All the 7 sqn Cans had the underwing serials, I have pics of them (on slides unfortunatly). I can’t remember seeing a 100 Sqn Canberrra without them neither, but haven’t got many shots of those.
Navy versions had underwing serials aswel.
What I’m wondering is wether maybe the serials were eventually left off when some of the aircraft went through their later services (during the RAFs tactical era).
However all 7 sqn Canberras had them from 1969 until they went out of service in late 1980.

Despite the TT18 being in 7 sqdn markings the picture was taken at Kinloss as I was at the other end of the camera, 7 sqdn used Kinloss for operations on the western isles ranges.
ALL the TT18’s I ever flew in had no underwing markings but as I said almost all had no underwing markings, some ex Navy ones may well have had them when they were taken on by 100 sqdn.

RAF Canberra TT.18s most certainly did have their serials displayed on the wing undersides, in large black figures against a yellow black ground.

BTW the previous two photobucket pics, the first one is WK124, pictured below with underwing serial showing (I think taken at Mawgan not Kinloss), and the second was one that appeared on the civil show circuit for a time.
WK128 was an RAE Canberra which only displayed its serial under one wing.

Come to NEAM. We have the only TT18 painted as such. From passing memory, I don’t think the serials appear on the wings. no photo’s either yet….

EDIT: Shows what I know (read posts immediately below…) and to be fair, I’ve never really taken any notice!
