dark light

Did I imagine it??

Someone tell me I didn’t!

A Russian Hurricane, with a local mod to carry a machine-gun….

BEHIND THE COCKPIT!!!

Something tells me this is genuine, but I’m not convinced as I cannot find a photo of it….

Aha! The very beast! Cheers for that.

Noticed there also seems to be a panel or some skinning removed from just behind the wing as well. Any ideas what that might have been for?

Quick bale – out exit for gunner ???:D 😉

But seriously I wonder what it’s performance was?

Our MMP Hurricane book mentioned says:

Hurricane with a rear gunner
One Hurricane (Canadian-built Mk XI BW948) supplied to USSR was fitted in 1942 with an open rear gunner’s position with a flexibly mounted ShKAS machine gun just behind the pilot’s cockpit. The sliding canopy was removed.”

Cheers,

Of course it could be reverse evolution asserting itself with a Hurricane metamorphosing back into a Hart 😀 Attach the Hills slipwing and voila.

But seriously I wonder what it’s performance was?

Only a guess but p’raps some sort of window? for looking down.

Maybe – There is a Dzus fasted removable wooden-framed fabric covered panel there. It’s given as an artillery observation type, and it’s an artist’s interpretation – may (just) be wrong.

But it is quoted as being a Sea Huricane so maybe that’s where the hook was.

Nope. The hook’s fitted further aft.

Hawker Restorations hinted at doing such a conversion IIRC

This could be a whole new thread in itself – Russian fighter mods!!

I think there were numerous field mods to Russian Hurricanes – fairly certain there was a two seat conversion with a mg in the back (open) cockpit?

Try Mushroom’s Hurricane book, that’s quite good on Russian versions.
