Does anyone remember this symposium which took place 20 years or so ago at the Commonwealth Institute in S Kensington? I think it was organised by a publisher for publicising a book launch. It had a stellar cast including a number of well known WW2 fighter pilots, Gordon Mitchell and Lord Balfour of Inchyre. One abiding memory was hearing Lord Balfour, who was a WW1 pilot, describing seeing Richtofens squadron “gambolling around in the distance like a group of brightly coloured puppies”. History straight from the horses mouth, great stuff. As was the panel discussion on air combat and the relative merits of Spitfires and Hurricanes. I wonder if a transcript exists??

This sounds very much like the book launch of ‘R J Mitchell – World famous Aircraft Designer – Schooldays to Spitfire’ by Gordon Mitchell. 1986
Memory clouds the location but all he big names, RAF/test pilots, designers and personalities were there, including Lord Balfour who wrote the foreword.
