RAFM Hendon – any photo requests?

Planning to spend most of this Wednesday at the RAF Museum down the road from me taking photos – just wondering if anyone had anything they’d like photographing? Unfortunately because of the opening times i’ll have to go early for the Claude Grahame White hangar, personally I prefer leaving the best stuff till last but don’t have much choice!

Cheers, Rob

I have probably left it too late, but can you get a nice one of the Sunderland for me at some time please?:)

Sadly one of my uncles died this week & not only was he Royal Signals attached to the RAF at Pembroke on them, but he was a trustee of this A/C when it was displayed there. (he actually rigged one of the turrets up so that when you pressed the trigger, the sound of machine guns could be heard, whether this feature has been been removed,I don’t know).

Hello

Could you take some photographs of the Mk1 spifire X4590. As my father was responsible for movig it from RAF Henlow for display at RAF Finningly in the mid 70’s.

Any pictures of the spitfire would be good.

Regards

Cheers chaps, will try and get all the photo requests, only thing I can think i’ll be limited by is the size of my cameras memory card. Mark V, i’ll be the short spikey ginger haired young guy wandering around wide eyed! I’ll be heading there first thing so I can spend as long as possible in the Claude Grahame-White Hangar so might be able to get the photos online tomorrow night. If anyone else is going, feel free to say hi to me if you see me. I don’t bite, honest!

Mike, if you put your views into a letter to Michael Fopp at Hendon they’ll have a greater impact. Hendon has been a decline of a thousand cuts but if people don’t take the trouble to write to the museum’s management the official view will be that the lack of opposition means that people passively accept this decline and restriction of access.

Agreed entirely, though sadly I’ve found in the past that expressing any views to Hendon is a bit like peeing into wind!

…Still, I leanrt something new, about the internal storage of depth charges that were winched out along the wings before an attack. I had wondered what the holes were for! DS

you obviously never built the Airfix model of the Sunderland then:D 😀 😀 – mind you it was probably their most expensive aircraft model when it first came out.

Hendon Bomber Hall closed for a function

The Sunderland was closed because the whole of the mezzanine in the BoB hall had to be shut as there were no staff to be deployed up there. I imagine it is our old friend H&S again. We could hear the internal audio tour playing away to itself, as we went around the outside…” and now if you move down…” Still, I leanrt something new, about the internal storage of depth charges that were winched out along the wings before an attack. I had wondered what the holes were for!

I was quite peeved not to be able to get any more than a glimpse of the Bomber Hall. Whilst I think it appropriate to have functions in the museum, it does cause a lot of disruption. I would have been really angry if I had travelled a long way to see it. As it was the hall was open until 12, but I don’t know how long it was closed for after that.

I was there last week – Bomber Hall was shut because there was a function on and the hanger was full of tables and chairs; and the Sunderland wasn’t open for walkthroughs as there weren’t enough staff – some internal shots would therefore be nice! Ta

Appalling- a major hall should never be shut like that, nor an attraction like the Sunderland walkthrough. 🙁

Hi Rob,

A nice general view of the Anson fuselage on the Queen Mary along with one showing the detail of the nose to the wing root would be most appreciated.

Rob
Would appreciate a couple of tasty low-angle pics of their Canberra PR.3, say three-quarter front from stbd side and three-quarter rear port side. (The rear view may pose probs though as it might be roped off.)

Nobody ever seems to take photos of that Canberra. It is the New Zealand Air Race winner and one of only two PR.3’s left extant. The other is at MAM. 😀

Hello Rob;
It seems one can find a photo or two of most any of the aircraft, somewhere on the Internet, with some digging. But it is REALLY hard to find photos or images of the aero engines on display. I would especially enjoy seeing some different image views of various WWI aero engines, from different angles. *AND* I would be happy to trade you some photos that are in YOUR area of interest. Would certainly appreciate seeing photos of ANY of the WWI memorabilia, bits & peices, as well. 🙂

If you see someone underneath the B-25 with a tape measure that will be me!
