Help identifying part?

Hi there,

Currently I am involved in settling the affairs of an elderly friend who recently passed away.

He was a keen aviation and car enthusiast. Whilst sorting through over 60 years of memorabillia, I have come upon a Dowty Fuel Pump, which I believe (from it’s size) is more than likely from the aviation side of his interests.

Details:

Dowty Fuel Pump NG-320 Mk. 4
Issue 21. Serial DPS 24/56
36mm-W05

Does anyone have an idea of this pump’s use?

Many thenaks

Cheers

Stew

Hi Stewart

I may be able to help you as my Dad was one of the few Dowty Fuel Sytem Engineers that covered all the RAF bases etc in the UK

I will ask him but coincindentally as a result of a special trip for him around one of his old bases i discovered he first dealt with the fuel pumps on Gannets.

Plus i paid a visit to the Naval Airmuseum at Nordholtz where they have an upside down enigne outside which of course allows you to view the fuel pump

It looks very likely that your pump is off a Gannet but i will get the numbers checked with Dad as he remembers every engine he has worked on

His work has seen him physically cover: –
Gannet – Double Mamba Engine at Bristol
Hunter – Sapphire @ RAF Waterbeach and Wattisham
Victor – Sapphire @ RAF Gaydon, Cottesmore, Wittering and Witton
TSR2 – Double Sapphire @ development Anstey
Phantom- Spey @ RAF Coningsby, Leuchars and Woodhall Spa
Jaguar – Adour @ RAF Warton, Coltishall and Lossiemouth
Harrier /P1127 – Pegasus @ development Bristol

the gannet pump can be seen here

Did the guy you are dealing with work for Dowty at all ?

cheers

Dowty gas turbine fuel pumps were usually labelled ENG followed by a number.
The /56 is almost certainly 1956 and this would roughly tally with the fact that it is an ENG-320, as the limited info I have about these things is mid-1960s and the type numbers are up in the 600s by then.

There is a very similar looking Dowty pump fitted to the Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire, but I don`t have any pics I`m afraid.

About the reference to the Harrier, the Pegasus 5 & 6 are the only ones I have info about and are early examples fitted to the Kestrel. These had a ENG-724/2 dual fuel pump.

Finally, Dowty fuel systems are not nearly as common as Lucas, but were used by almost all manufacturers on specific engines at one time or another.

Other than the information I posted originally, there’s nowt else I can find.

The label is totally perished so no joy there.

Been in touch with Messier-Dowty, who “think” it was a standard part fitted to several types of aircraft, possibly a Harrier being the front runner.

Dowty was bought over by an American Company called Delphi. So despite my Scottish nature, I telephoned them in the States. After 10 mins on hold, I gave up. Contacted their UK folks in Cheltenham, who could not help either.

Kind of hitting a wall with this one.

Hi Stewart
Is there a data plate opposite the one in the photo… ie on t’other side ?

On Dowty stuff the part No prefix often is an acronym that describes what the pump is for and I was trying to figure out ‘NG’ but looking at the photo I realise it could be ‘ENG’ ,but not being a ‘sumpy’ I dunno just by looking at it.
The correct part number will give a positive ID.But it does look like an Engine driven pump.

PS is anything legible on the little brown tag ??

Okay dokey, seems the mystery pump has everyone stumped.

Can anyone suggest places/people to contact where I can perhaps solve this one?

Thanks

Stew
