Freddie Lakers "CARVAIR"

Seem to rember they incresed the size of the tail by moding the C54.

There was a proposal for a SuperCarvar using a DC6 or 7 sadly they never made if off the drawing boards.

Didn’t they use a DC-7 rear fuselage and a DC-7 nose wheel in the conversion? I seem to remember the basis for the conversion was the DC-4 as mentioned elsewhere on the thread.

Anyone out there PLEASE have any scale drawings of the Carvair they would like to share?
I want to build a large scale radio controlled model of this fine machine.
I used to live on the approach path to Southend Airport and have many fond memories I’d like to re live with a working scale replica.

(HSAL)Gloster made some chunks of its structure, and bid in 1957 to be assembly/test source. HSAL then entered the DC-3 replacement market, choosing a low wing to differentiate from An-24/F-27/HPR.7. In 1958 Airwork (Furness Withy Line) bought FL, Air Charter and ATEL, and abandoned Accountant. FL spoke of pursuing Avro for 748 rip-off, but he became MD of BUA, whose mariner-owners had no wish for a vendetta.

I asked him in 1980 whether he applauded his godson 748’s success: he gave me what might be termed a quizzical look and moved on to work others in the room.

The Aviation traders Accountant. I recall the prototype languishing on the scrapheap at either Stanstead or Southend. For its day I always thought it was a great aircraft.

thanks for the link top stuff really exellent videos,they certainly are very sedate when lifting off ,the date is 2005 so i take it there are still some carvairs flying ?(or at least one):cool: 😎 😎

I worked for Freddie Laker with Aviation Traders out of Stanstead and Southend in 1959 & 1960.
We had 2 Brittanias, Some Tudors, and DC4s. We also flew Bristol Freighters out of Southend. I remember the carvair but have no pictures. I’m pretty certain it was a DC4 conversion by raising the flight deck to extend the car deck underneath.
