Hampden AE 116 Sept 2 1941

Today I received the book “The Hampden File” by Harry Moyle and was thrilled to find a picture of Hampden AE 116 being recovered after crashing at Waddington.

AE 116 was my fathers aircraft and that night they had been on a mine laying trip to Copenhagen. The duration of the flight was 9.35 hours and they ran out of fuel while attempting too land. All of the crew survived the crash and the aircraft was repaired and returned to service.

Steve my father completed a tour with 50 squadron and was shot down on his last trip with 97 squadron ending up a P.O.W. In total he flew 64 operations. How he survived can be put down to luck I suppose.

Great. Glad they all survived. Not being nosey but did your father complete his tour and survive the war?
