NEW Bomber Command film – Target For Tonight

I just happened onto this site by accident. A new film about an RAF Bomber Command Lancaster crew in 1944, including RNZAF and RCAF crewmembers.

If nothing else, the poster is really cool. Now I want to see the film. Does anyone know more?

Linrey, thanks for that Iron Bird link, it looks very interesting too. Here’s their website
http://www.ironbird.com.au

At first i thought this may be the Australian bomber Command film that was being made last year but it’s different.

Just on CG…

With more powerful Desktop PCs becoming cheaper all the time, and professional quality Animation software being reasonably cheap (or free, depending on your moral standpoint!….) You’ll find CG to be very likely in cheaper productions. Just depends on the skills of the animator.

Here’s a link to another, even smaller production, called “Iron Bird”. It seems to be one clip of several, but they’ve only released this one. (Done by an Australian group… students I think….??) There are some inaccuracies.. but the point is the CG. From flak bursts to the bomb drop. Some quite good CG.

Also this one if you haven’t seen it. A brilliantly done sequence involving Mosquitos and Spitfires, done by a Japanese guy…

Only 30mins? Hmm. Well, you never know, some of these short, low-budget indy films tend to get the directors noticed quickly. Christopher Nolan’s first effort (Following) was a whopping 70mins and a bank-busting £6000 budget – now look what he’s doing these days!

Wasn’t there a low-budget short made a couple of years ago, featuring the HAC’s Spitfire VB? Something tells me it was called “The Goodbye Plane” or something similar. It was mentioned in these here parts….

Looks like a small budget indy film. I doubt therefore CGI will be involved, which will keep this thread quiet 😉

The nose photo featured on their website is quite a famous shot, is it not? They used it on the World at War iirc.

I would have thought a low budget would have meant CGI was more likely than less – much cheaper than miniatures, for example.

I’d be interested to see the results though.

To be honest if they planned doing all interior and exterior lanc filming on one day then it sounds a little low budget. Hope not.

The film is only around 30 minutes long. They filmed the “flying” sequence inside the hangar using some blue screen technology. I could be mistaken as I was outside with the second unit who were filming pick up shots of ground crew and base personnel.

An Indy flick it is. But I reckon there will be CGI but nothing too over the top… merely stars, flak and searchlights among other things, I would have thought.

The film makers will know more. Has anyone e-mailed them?

I think they’re very efficient these days, film makers.

Christian Slater’s movie Churchill, The Hollywood Years, was filmed at my then next door neighbours – Plymouth’s Royal William Yard.

The site was seen extensively throughout the movie, and they were only there for 2 days.

Lanc crews were virtually always 7. Sometimes a “second dickie” (pilot on first op) came making up 8. Dont know how they can do it with 5 unless they ignore both gunner positions and film ahead of the main spar where the Pilot, Flight Engineer, Navigator, Wireless Op and bomb aimer are located. To be honest if they planned doing all interior and exterior lanc filming on one day then it sounds a little low budget. Hope not.

Most of the interiors were shot on a Sunday in late June at East Kirkby. Weather held up a bit of the production as the exteriors were supposed to be shot on that day too. I’ve been told that they intend on coming back to do the exteriors soon.

Have they remade the wartime original then ? Anyone know ?

From the first line on the synopsis page:

“This is not a remake of the 1941 Crown film service documentary of the same name, but a story of a bomber crews mission to Berlin in 1944.”

http://www.targetfortonight.com/synopsis.htm

Only five actors for a Lancaster crew, is that a little low? I thought there were usually six or seven?

Sounds interesting- hope it’s reasonably well made, with not too many cheesy effects etc!

I’d like to see it as well. Apparently filmed at East Kirkby with Just Jane. Don’t know when its out this autumn.
