Autogyro reproduction set to fly in Spain

An airworthy reproduction of the world’s first gyroplane has been completed at Camarenilla aerodrome in Toledo Spain

The project, undertaken in partnership with the Spanish Air Force and the city of Getafe, marks the centenary of the Cierva C-4 autogyro’s first flight.

The machine is a recreation of that taken aloft from Getafe on January 17, 1923 with Capt Alejandro Gómez Spencer at the controls. After 11 months of work, the ‘new’ C-4 was rolled out on January 15 this year to begin ground tests. Two days later it was presented at Getafe air base to mark the centenary of the original aircraft’s debut.

It's been made using as many genuine parts as possible, with the addition of a modern engine and rotor. The aircraft will make a maiden flight in the near future after further tests have been completed. It’s pictured at Camarenilla on January 15.
