The operator has taken losses across its hubs however it has stated that its future plans should help secure commercial earnings

Norwegian airport operator, Avinor has recorded fewer aircraft movements and passengers for the second quarter of 2021, leading to a decline in traffic and commercial revenues.

Compared to the same period last year, air traffic measured in the number of travellers increased by 68.2%. There was also an improvement in aircraft movements (39.9%).

For the first six months of this year, the level was recorded at 77% below 2019 figures.

“Towards the summer season 2021, there has been an increase in travel activity, as a result of increased vaccination rates and easing of entry restrictions,” said Abraham Foss, CEO of Avinor. “At the same time, an increase in infection pressure and the prevalence of more contagious viral mutations mean that there is still uncertainty about how traffic will develop in the long term.”

Avinor has stated that it is moving to secure and develop its commercial earnings. In June, it was announced that Travel Retail Norway and Airport Retail Norway had won tenders to operate duty-free facilities at the hubs in the region between 2023 and 2027.

Furthermore, the operator has won a contract for a new baggage area at Oslo Airport to Beumer Group.

Foss continues: “Avinor's goal is to ensure that the group can do without operating subsidies as quickly as possible and will continue its efforts to streamline operations to ensure the group's financial strength in the longer term. Avinor's strategic priorities, including the level of operating costs and investments, will be adapted to a long-term situation picture for aviation.”

Pre-project arrangements for a new hub in Bodo have also been completed and submitted for quality assurance tests. The new facility is set to be financed through contributions from the state, the site’s municipality and Avinor.
