Avinor selects baggage handling provider for Oslo Airport

The new technology is based on data-driven decisions that help integrate speed loading for optimal efficiency

A global supplier of automated baggage handling systems (BHS), BEUMER Group, has been chosen by Avinor to design, implement and operate a new BHS at Oslo Airport.

A CrisBag tote-based BHS platform is also set to be delivered to the Norwegian hub by summer 2024, helping departure, arrival and transfer luggage to be processed inside the same system whilst being tracked.

Avinor has entered a 25-year operation and maintenance partnership with the firm to help continually maximise the airport’s operational strategy.

“The CrisBag system is a proven technology which is used in challenging hub operations in some of the world's most renowned hubs, which are known for their operational punctuality," said Klaus Toftgaard Spens, BEUMER Group CEO.

Stine Ramsted Westby, Oslo Airport’s director, added: “It has been our wish to invest in a new system that allows us to achieve expansion and to use new technology to modernise airport operation. An investment of this scale is based on a solution that is simple to reconfigure and expand to meet future requirements. Low operating costs and data transparency are also vital to help us to grow and to continue to optimise our performance."

With automated speed loading, the operator has said that baggage handlers will run a more effective operation as the need for heavy lifting will be eliminated.

This new BHS investment is part of Oslo’s plan to ‘future-proof’ performance and to become a central hub within the region.

Recently, San Francisco Airport opened its newly refurbished Harvey Milk Terminal with a CrisBag system. Munich was amongst the first to use the technology, which has now been at the site for two decades.
