The Coningsby-based Merlin-powered fleet is now airworthy again
In a recent statement the RAF has confirmed that the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight is flying again, after a concern with Merlin engines was successfully addressed.
The Coningsby-based operation reported: “We have now conducted a thorough investigation into the fault experienced on one of our Merlin engines. Our excellent team of engineers and industry partners have undertaken the necessary inspections, maintenance and safety assurance work to ensure that we can return to flight all of our aircraft powered by Merlin engines without restriction. We look forward to our planned programme of appearances…”
With a fleet of 12 aircraft, the airframes temporarily effected were as follows: Avro Lancaster B.I PA474, Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IIa P7350, Mk.Vb AB910 and LF.IXe MK356, plus Hawker Hurricanes Mk.IIcs LF363 and PZ865.
