The newly updated systems are set to streamline the passenger experience whilst limiting physical contact and promoting safety measures

Biometric facial recognition technology has been deployed at Tokyo Haneda Airport by intelligence passenger solutions firm, Materna IPS.

Travellers’ ID cards are scanned at self-service check-in stations, which are then compared to the image on the identification with the photo captured at the kiosk.

This then has the ability to enrol the images onto the airport’s ‘Face Express’ system at the bag drop off. This sequence hopes to enhance passenger experience whilst improving security measures at the airport.

As customers are able to use the touch points, physical contact is limited and therefore the risk of infection is lowered.

“On behalf of [Tokyo International Air Terminal Cooperation] including management level, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to Materna IPS to release this programme before Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which is one of our goals of this project,” said Yuya Yamazaki, technical project manager of TIAT.

In 2020, Materna delivered 104 bag drop kiosks in terminals two and three at the facility, which have now been upgraded to include a biometric authentication process in conjunction with Collins Aerospace.
