British Airways sent a second relief flight to India on Friday (May 21) to deliver urgent medical goods to the country as the virus continues to spread.

A total of 18 tonnes of equipment was sent over, including oxygen concentrators which were donated through charities such as Oxfam, Khalsa Aid, Christian Aid and LPSUK.

The carrier is working alongside its sister company, IAG Cargo in collaboration with Air bp, NATS, HAL and Indian ground handlers to ensure the delivery of humanitarian relief.

“We’re hugely grateful to British Airways for providing this free cargo space to transport vital aid like PPE and oxygen concentrators to India, where Oxfam and partners are delivering urgent medical supplies to hospitals and health centres in some of the worst-hit areas,” said Danny Sriskandarajah, chief executive of Oxfam GB.

“This emergency kit could mean the difference between life and death for people in India facing a deadly second wave of coronavirus.”

After a week of welcoming passengers back to international travel, Sean Doyle, BA’s chief executive and chairman, said the company is “mindful that the fight against Covid-19 is not over yet”.

He added: “Our business has a deep connection with India, it is only right that we continue to support by joining our travel and charity partners to transport much needed medical equipment to India.”

Both British Airways and IAG Cargo have continued to keep the link between the UK and South Asia open throughout the pandemic.

The airline has been working alongside charities and aviation partners over the last ten days to help plan cargo shipments.
