The site is set to analyse up to 10000 samples per day, providing results within a few hours of completion

Dubai International has opened its new Covid-19 testing facility which is said to be the world’s largest airport-based lab for processing PCR tests.

The facility – which is the result of a joint venture between Dubai Airports, Dubai Health Authority and Pure Health – was officially opened by Sheikh Mansour Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the prime minister of the UAE and Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman of the airport operator, on June 22.

“The drastic change in travel norms and the introduction of travel protocols including PCR testing have changed the airport experience of travellers around the world,” said Al Maktoum. “As the world's busiest international hub prepares for a surge in passenger traffic over the summer holidays and beyond, we were keen to make sure that the airport journey is safer, smoother and faster while fulfilling the required health protocols. The lab's quick turnaround for processing test results will go a long way in helping us deliver a service experience the world expects from Dubai.”

PCR tests are analysed at the new 20,000 sq ft site located close to Terminal 2. Using the latest World Health Organisation (WHO) approved equipment, up to 100,000 samples can be tested per day, according to DXB.

The implementation of the new lab follows the announcement of the re-opening of Terminal 1 and Concourse D at the hub on June 24, after 15 months out of operation.
