The US Department of Transportation, through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), has announced that 19 airports across Alaska will receive $85m (£62m) through the Airport Improvement Programme.
The funding is set to help with safety, access and sustainability measures.
Aviation is considered to be an important transportation link within the region, as it aids the delivery of food and medical supplies, whilst facilitating emergency evacuations and daily commutes.
“Aviation is a way of life in America, and nowhere is this truer than in Alaska,” said Steve Dickson, FAA administrator. "These grants invest in the safety of Alaska’s airport infrastructure.”
Specifically, funding is being granted to Atqasuk Edward Burnell Sr Memorial Airport to purchase snow removal equipment and update the taxiway and taxiline.
The other hubs receiving substantial monetary aid are Bethel, McGrath, Cold Bay, King Cove, Kaltag, Nenana Municipal and Sitka Rocky Gutierrez.
The Airport Improvement Programme receives around $3.2bn (£2.3bn) in funding per year. In total, the FAA plans to award more than 1,800 grants in 2021.
