Gripen prototype arrives at new home

Sweden’s Aeroseum took delivery of its latest exhibit on November 16 2022 – SAAB JAS 39-2 ‘52’

The jet is the second prototype of what is now the hugely successful Gripen. The attraction is located within a former Swedish Air Force subterranean hangar just to the north of Gothenburg.

One of five prototypes ordered, the aircraft took to the air for the first time on May 4, 1990, and was used by SAAB to support the Gripen test programme. It was withdrawn after 461 hours of flight in 1999, and transferred to the Swedish Air Force Museum at Malmslätt. Work to prepare the jet for display was completed in early December.
