Weekend of events planned at Gloucestershire Airport
The Jet Age Museum will celebrate 10 years of public opening at its site adjacent to Gloucestershire Airport over the weekend of 15-16 July.
Events will include a presentation on Saturday morning by museum patron Ian Whittle son of the UK inventor of the turbojet, Sir Frank Whittle, on the first flights of a jet aircraft. That will be followed in the afternoon by a talk on the electrification of flight by Roger Targett of Electroflight, based at Staverton.
Saturday afternoon at 2.50pm is set to see a flypast by a Hurricane and Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, while Sunday afternoon brings a flypast by the BBMF Lancaster, scheduled for 2.37pm.
Other charitable organisations with which the Jet Age Museum has been associated over the last 10 years will have a presence, namely the Royal Air Forces Association, the Soldiers’, Sailors’ & Airmen’s Families Association, the Royal British Legion, the Royal Naval Association, Fly2Help, Blind Veterans and the Dave Partridge re-enactors, as well as other fascinating displays and contributions from the museum’s volunteer cadre. A celebratory cake sponsored by Busy Bees will be on sale in the café and a barbecue will be available for visitors from 12.00 to 2.00pm.
On display for the first time to visitors will be the museum’s newly completed replica of an Airspeed Horsa troop-carrying glider cockpit, and its restored Link Trainer, both of which are closely associated with Gloucestershire’s wartime aviation heritage.
