Junkers Ju 52 located in Gulf of Finland

The wreck of Junkers Ju 52/3m Wk Nr 5494 Kaleva has been located near the island of Keri north of Tallinn, Estonia, at a depth of 70m. It was registered OH-ALL in 1936 for Finnish airline Aero Oy.

On June 14, 1940, it was shot down by two Soviet Air Force Ilyushin DB-3Ms with the loss of all nine people on board. The flight was the last to leave Estonia before the Soviet annexation of the Baltic country three days later, but the reason for the shoot down remains a mystery. During the early 1990s, a stone memorial to those lost was erected at Keri.

Among the parts located include the undercarriage, one engine and parts of the wings. Work is now underway to create 3D images of the wreck, with the possibility of recovering parts of it soon.
